Where would you eat?

If you could only eat or experience dining one evening, where would it be? At DL, DCA, or Medieval Times etc.? Has anyone tried the Medieval Times or Pirates (there's a new dance one I think I read about also)?

Medieval Times is the worst food! You have to grocery store grade roasted chicken with your hands! No thank you! I would do Napa Rose, Blue Bayou, or Jazz Kitchen.

Medieval Times is terrible. Stay on propery and eat. Napa Rose for a nicer meal but there are always the DTD restaurants to consider.

What are the ages and genders in your group?
That's probably the most relevant point.

If you are interested in the food, then I would agree with the assessment of Medieval Times, but there is much more to the experience than the food. It's about the experience. Think about it like camping. The food just tastes better when I'm camping and yet it really isn't nearly as "good" as what we cook at home. It depends on the ages and genders in the group.

I had a poor experience recently at Jazz Kitchen so could not recommend it.

But again, it isn't just about the food. It is also about the experience.

I prefer the Big Thunder Ranch BBQ at the back of DL park near FantasyLand. Good food, plenty of it (as much as you can eat) and a show to boot. But, I like BBQ. Even mediocre BBQ and this was better than mediocre but I wouldn't call it the best either. Again, dependant in part on your family.

It also depends on what you expect from this meal/experience. If you want a culinary treat, you're going to get a different answer than if you want good value (e.g. price/qty) vs. if you want to be entertained. I don't know of a place where you can get all three at the same time.

I'd vote for Ralph Brennan, Storytellers Cafe, or Tortilla Jo's. I've not been to the Medieval Times in CA, but that's because I almost never want to leave the resort area as soon as I get there (which, I know, means I'm playing right into Disney's hand, but I'm cool with it).

That kind of depends on the situation.

If I was in DL for only one evening, I would probably choose Carnation Cafe, because it is right smack in the middle of everything and I wouldn't miss one bit of park.

Or, I might just grab a corndog!

Good Question since there are so many option that can tailor best to some interests.

If it one night because of one day, I wouldn't leave the parks at all, and probably have something fast from counter service so I can ride Splash Mountain again.

I've read lots about the Big Thunder Ranch BBQ. Would you recommend this over Medieval Times or Pirates dinner?

A visit to Medieval Times or Pirates is going to take you away from the park for 2-3 hours. You'll have a great time at either but it won't be Disney and the food is marginal but OK.

Big Thunder takes far less time, but the entertainment could be considered a little dull and boring for the ages you mentioned. They do try to draw in the audience and get them to participate in sing-along and things like that, but there are a LOT of tables and it is not theater seating.

The suggestions from others are largely dining venues only whose primary source of "entertainment" is the theme of the restaurant.

Both Pirates and Medieval times are highly engaging entertainment experiences, that include a meal.

I hope you can envision what I'm trying to communicate here. It really does depend more on what you are expecting. How much time are you willing to spend away from DLR? How much are you willing to spend on a meal? What type of things entertain your kids, keep them engaged?

Someone else suggested a character meal. Our kids really enjoyed Goofy's Kitchen. It is mostly about the meal, but there are characters and they even encourage the kids to get up and dance with Goofy. It is more than just sitting at the table while the characters wander by. It is buffet style so it can be a pain for parents of younger kids who have to help their kids fill their plates.

I hope you are getting the picture of what I mean here.

Thanks everyone! I know we will definitely being trying out Big Thunder BBQ! Our holiday is 8 days with at least 5 of them dedicated to the park including the friday night halloween party. From what I've read, it doesn't look like the park is open late (monday closes for halloween party and Tuesday for a conference party) so either of those nights we are looking for something else to do. Because of the ages of my boys 12 & 8, I was thinking maybe Medieval times or the Pirates unless someone has ideas of other dining experiences. I've heard lots about MT but not Pirates.
