I am going to try to upgrade when we cruise later this month. Where do I ask for an upgrade? Do I ask at the port upon
check-in or do I go to Guest Services?:sunny:

Port upon check-in. That is where we did our upgrade. We were upgraded 4 categories on a 4 night cruise for a family of 4 for $200! IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE CAPACITY!

We were originally booked in a cat.9 and upgraded to a cat. 5.

So how did that upgrade work? Did you just ask what was available? How was the price negotiated?

That's a great deal Cindy! I guess it just depends on how full the ship is when you sail.... so you'd have a better chance of an upgrade in the "non-busy" cruising months.

My DH and I did the magic cruise on feb 22, We were originally booked for cat 11. then upgraded to a cat. 5 for $600 at the port. We went straight to the supervisor line, it's all the way at the end and asked for the upgrade there. There was no line and I think we had a better chance to choose a better upgrade. Right after that we checked ourselves in. We were also there aroung 10:45.

We also upgraded at the port, from two cat 11 to two cat 8. It cost $500 for seven of us, four of whom were adults, a savings of $200 from the brochure quote. We upgraded at the port. We had already checked in, then I asked about upgrading and they sent us down to the far end, the supervisor. I had called about a week ahead. Our reservation was held by a (pretty useless) travel agency, so I had called DCL and asked about upgrading, they quoted me a $200 total cost to upgrade, although they could not do it, or make it official. Our cruise was about the slowest time, the ship was only 2/3 full. If you want an upgrade, check before you go, don't just wait to get to the port.

When we upgraded at the port, we knew we had a low level outside room and inquired to get upgraded just to a higher floor. But when the CM said she had cat.5 available with verandah on a high level for $200, we grabbed it. The sailing was not a sellout, but was pretty packed. It was Memorial day weekend. So Rmgoode, you should have no problem upgrading in March.

What about a FREE upgrade to a better category?

If there are vacant staterooms in lower categories available on sail date, will they let you upgrade to a better room for free?

What about before sail date (like 59 days out, after final payment is past due)? I read that Disney has an easier time selling the higher categories (cheaper rooms) closer to sail date.

Thanks!

Free upgrades are rare, but do happen. There really seems to be no rhyme or reason to the free upgrades....everyone on this board always trys to figure out DCL's system...but there doesn't seem to be one.....they will upgrade if they need a particular cabin and it does not matter when you booked, who you booked with, return cruiser, whatever....I think it's a pretty random thing.

Remember, March is spring break month. I know our break next year is the last full week in March. We cruise this Sat. March 15 and last year it was March 16th, the ship was full. I would check with DCL now if you want to upgrade your room, the ship might be sold out. Maybe you might get lucky if somebody canceled. Kathy
