Where to stop along the way?

I'm not sure what you like to visit, but there is Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA (not far from DE) and Winterthur Museum in Wilmington, DE. If you go further, Baltimore has lots of stuff at Inner Harbor. It would break up your trip nicely. DC has all the Smithsonian Museums.

Do you like pinball. There is a place in Brunswick Georgia with loads of pinball machines called pinball palace and for about 20$ you can play as long as you want… that’s what we are doing in our way down.

Off the beaten path but you could drive all the way down along the NJ shore to Cape May, NJ which is lovely and stay there, or just check it out then continue on the ferry over to Rehoboth, Delaware and spend the night there before continuing down past Ocean City, MD and into VA. In the summer these roads are a beast but this time of year you might be able to avoid a ton of city traffic and see some beautiful shoreline, plus hotels are probably super cheap.
