where to stay

We are relatively new members and we are planning to visit the first week of Jan 2010. Should we stay at our home resort SS or try and get a reservation at BW or AK.

The beauty is you can try and get a reservation wherever you want to stay! We made the decision to try all of the DVC resorts (almost there!), and am so glad we have! We have really fallen in love with DVC as a whole, not a particular resort.

With that said, I would reserve at SSR, and if you decide you want to stay somewhere else, make reservations at the other resort at the 7 month mark. If you don't get your first or second choices, then you still have a reservation at your home.

If your first trip as a DVC member will be sentimental for you, you may want to stay at your home. Though we own at SSR and love it, our first trip as DVC members was at BWV. It will always hold a special place because of it. So, if you want to do some "home resort bonding," there's no better time than your first trip!!!

Whatever you decide, have a wonderful trip, and welcome home!

I'm not an expert -- just getting started with DVC myself, but my understanding is that you can only book your home resort 11 months ahead of time, and others 7 months ahead of time. I think you can book your home resort, and waitlist another one and change later if it's available.

You will want to look at a lot of other threads (and sites) about all the resorts to see which one best meets your needs (or wishes) -- that's not a decision someone else can recommend to you -- they all have different appeal. Many people love each of the different resorts, for different reasons.

I would go for Wilderness Lodge or Animal Kingdom Lodge that time of year. If cold weather passes through, both have nice fireplaces in their lobby.

Since your dates will be during the marathon you should reserve SSR right now. When the 7 months out date arrives you can try for other resorts and waitlist for 2 choices if necessary. Since BWV and AKV are both pretty popular, you may not be able to book them without waitlisting.

As others have suggested, I would reserve your home resort at the 11 month mark. Then you can do a little research, figure out which resort you may want to switch to and try to do that at the 7 month mark.
We were just there this past Dec. and I reserved SSR at the 11 month mark and was able to switch to OKW for part of our visit and I waitlisted for BCV for the second week of our visit and it did come through. Just think positive
