Where to stay in NYC and how does that subway thing work? More questions Post #16

don't eat near times square. it's way over priced. we ate at some chain restaurant in times square once with my friends in college the same restaurant 4 blocks or so away was half the price.

i must admit though, i've always wanted to go to serendipity.

You can find ok places near TS and in the theatre district, but you have to know what you're doing. You have to stay away from any place that caters to tourists, eg: any restaurant you know from home. :)

One of my favorites is Blue Fin in the W at Times Square. I also love Becco & Esca, both Mario Batali restaurants. (Technically not exactly TS but close!)

You guys are great!!! OK so I will cross off Mars 2112 but I really want to see the Bronx zoo. My dd isn't into American girls dolls yet and I don't plan to introduce her. This is such great advice, please keep the tips coming!!

Ok, so you've got one day for the zoo, one for the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island - I'd do the tour bus on your third day (or maybe your first full day). Then you'd get the full blown NYC experience, and it's hop on/hop off so you don't have to worry about subways or cabs.

My thoughts on NYC:

Subway is most likely your best chance of getting anywhere around the city. The maps are not hard to read, and most subway riders are more than helpful in helping you get around.

For those suggesting the Empire State Building, be forwarned that when visiting the observatory they force you to have your picture taken and insist that you purchase it from them. I think it has something to do with a security measure, but for me, it's a real turn-off. I hope Top Of The Rock doesn't follow that suit.

And speaking of Rockefeller Center, I don't know if the skating rink will be up, but there's this neat little boutique that sells all Nintendo merchandise (games, consoles, toys, apparel, etc.). It used to be the Pokémon Center, but they redid it, and it doesn't look too bad.

But none of those midtown tourist traps can compare to my personal pick of NYC attractions: The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA). Located just south of Houston St, MoCCA represents all that there is about comics and cartoons as an artform in all forms of the medium, with a heavy focus on comic art. It has gotten alot of press regarding exhibits like "Cartoons Against the Axis" (WWII propaganda cartoons as part of an actual show in the 40's to help promote the sale of war bonds) and "Will Eisner: A Retrospective", and with its appearance at this past New York Comic Con, MoCCA has grown stronger than ever. In addition to their exhibits, they have some interesting programs and lectures every Monday evening. They even have classes scheduled for this coming Spring.

I have been to this museum, I have seen all their exhibits, I've even been to their annual Art Festival last year. The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art is one place in NYC not to be missed. If you want any more info, PM me. ;)

Have a nice trip into NYC!

How old are your kids?

Mine did enjoy the Sony place, whatever it's called. But they are older. Of course the Disney Store!

Did I mention New York pizza? :rotfl2:

We didn't do the Empire State Buildin because the line, being Spring break, was WAY long. We just didn't have the patience to wait. So if you go find out the best time to avoid a very long wait.

I work in Rockefeller Center and pass the rink every day. They clean the ice almost every day at lunch time 12-1. I think it's to make you eat in the places there at that time period.

It is very crowded and congested in this area at lunch time. I would plan to see it early in the morning or after 2 pm in the afternoon.

I do believe they do the picture thing at Top of the Rock.

I guess that means I'm not going to Top of the Rock anytime soon. :(

It's too bad really. They promote it so well.

BuddyGenie, I will double check it for you tomorrow.

I've been up there for a Christmas Party and it is really something to see.
