Where to Stay in LA?

I'm not sure if I'm posting this on the right board or not. We are heading out to Los Angeles in late August for the first time. Anyone have advice on where we should stay. We'll mostly be doing the touristy stuff while we're there. There's so many hotel choices, I'm starting to pull my hair out. Where would you recommend? There will be six of us, all adults.

My only recent experience was at the Sheraton (or maybe it was the Westin), near LAX. I stayed there as it is a Starwood hotel, looking for points when I can. It was fine.
