Where to stay after Cruise in Copenhagen?

We're a family of 5 sailing on the 7 day Northern Europe Cruise this August. After the cruise on August 8, we are staying one night, but have a 6am flight out of CPH airport on August 9. Any thoughts on where we should stay? I'm currently booked at Comfort Hotel Copenhagen airport--would it be easiest for us to take Disney transport to the airport on August 8, then walk to Comfort Hotel to check-in or at least have them hold our baggage, so we can sight-see for the rest of the day? Any other suggestions to make it easy for our 6am flight on August 9, but also easy to sight-see on the 8th? Thanks!

Hello! We sailed out of Copenhagen in August 2022.

Instead of booking at the airport, You'll want to look for Copenhagen City Center.

In the screenshot above, you'll see the Airport in the bottom Right corner. There isn't anything much but the airport at the airport.

In the center of the picture, you'll see the BIG Copenhagen. That's where all the walkability/walkable activities and sightseeing is. In order to get from the airport to the center of town, there is an easy train with luggage racks that is inexpensive and easy to use. The train station is under the airport. You would take the train to "Kobehaven Central Station"

In the very top of this picture are the Oceankaj terminals on the top right. Easiest way to get to Copenhagen from the terminal is a taxi. They are usually pretty inexpensive.

This picture shows the heart of Copenhagen and the Copenhagen Central Train station right outside Tivoli Gardens.

There are lots of great options in this area for hotels. We stayed at the "Wakeup Copenhagen" you see right by the river in the bend of the train tracks. (Very basic hotel, wasn't bad but would look for something nicer.) Disney Cruise Line's partner hotel is the Tivoli Hotel and Congress center here on the bottom of the picture.

Wakeup Copenhagen offers Luggage Lockers in their basement for an inexpensive fee. Definitely could ask to put your luggage in there so you don't have to take it all the way to the airport first. Maybe something to consider.

If you have a 6 am departure the next day, staying at the airport makes a lot of sense.

The Copenhagen main train station has luggage lockers. You could just take the transfer there, put your luggage in storage and explore the city. Then pick up the luggage in the evening, take the train to the airport and check into your hotel.

DCL usually also offers debarkation day excursions that end at the airport. That might be the easiest way to get a taste of the city. These are usually only bookable onboard.

Thanks for sharing your experience! We will be in Copenhagen a few days before the cruise as well, and will have time to explore the city. We are staying at the Copenhagen Marriott pre-cruise. I’m trying to find an easy way to drop off luggage, explore city, and be able to get to the airport early enough to catch our 6am flight the next day! I had heard the taxi lines post-cruise were very long (1+ hour) so was hoping to find other transportation options after the cruise. Did you find that to be the case when you disembarked? Thanks again for your detailed post!

Thanks! By taking “transfer” to the Copenhagen main train station, do you mean taxi? Or some other mode of transportation?

We're cruised out of Copenhagen 3 times with DCL and have always used the bus to take us to the railroad station. You just have to walk down to the first road to the right and the bus stop is right there on the right side of the road.

That’s great to know, thanks! Is it pretty easy to get on the bus with our luggage? I have 3 kids ages 6-12, so trying to find the most economical yet efficient way to get us to where we need to go :) Thanks!

That luggage hold info is great. @Flossbolna lays out a good plan. Not a lot of wasted time going back and forth.

And I would agree with the idea of staying as near the airport as possible (meaning nearness in travel time) if I have a very early flight.
Ah, that makes complete sense, and @Flossbolna has a great plan. So take bus to train station, drop off luggage in locker, explore, pick up luggage, take train to airport and walk to our hotel. Thanks!

Of course! Happy to help. When we disembarked, we were flying out same day around 1PM. We got off after breakfast around 9 AM and took a taxi from the Port to Copenhagen Central Train station to go the rest of the way to the airport.

I remember waiting in line for a taxi getting off the ship, but it was 15 - 30 min, definitely not an hour. They were moving people through the line very quickly. If you needed a large van or had a big traveling party it might take an hour but a normal family I would think 30 min is about the regular.

I like to use public transport whenever I can but taxi's were fairly inexpensive. Enough to the point that we didn't worry about busses, etc. and just used taxis.

Was there a reason you to the taxi to the train and train to the airport instead of taking the taxi all the way to the airport? We are cruising in/out of Copenhagen this summer on a different cruise line so I will have to figure this out.

On another thread someone mentioned that DCL offers transfers to train station. But you can also take public transport or a taxi. With three kids and luggage public transport might be a bit if a hassle.

I would recommend not to get the Copenhagen Card but the City Pass Small. https://dinoffentligetransport.dk/en/tickets/day-passes/city-pass-english/ it’s much less money and with the short amount of time you are most likely not saving that much on entrance fees to make the Copenhagen Card worth your while. Both are good for all public transport in the city and to the airport. It would cover the trip with bus from port to train station. And up to two kids under 12 are free with a paying adult b

Info on lockers at train station can be found here: https://www.seat61.com/stations/copenhagen.htm#Luggage_lockers

My one day itinerary for Copenhagen would be to stroll from the train station past Tivoli, across City Hall square (Rådhuspladsen) through the main shopping street (Strøget) to Kongens Nytorv which is at the top of Nyhavn (which means “new port”, but it was new in like 1700 or so). On the way you could veer off a little yo the left to go to Runde Tårn (means round tower), which is a tower that you could drive up in in a horse drawn carriage, so it doesn’t have stairs, but a walkway. Nice views from the top. There are several sightseeing boat tours available in Nyhavn, take one of these for an overview of the city. From Kongens Nytorv/Nyhavn walk over to Amalienborg where the Danish Queen lives.

What you want to do afterwards depends on how much you want to do in one day. The one thing I would advise against is to go and see the Little Mermaid statue. It’s a treck to get there and I never found it that impressive. If you take a boat tour, they will go by it.

Tivoli is a very charming amusement park. The entrance fee only covers the entry into the park, rides cost extra. Entrance is about 25$. You can pay for each ride or get an unlimited rides ticket. Tivoli is one of the inspirations for Disneyland and it is very charming! It would be a good end point if your day as it is directly next to the station.

I would recommend to get a snack of Danish Hot Dogs from one of the many Hot Dog stands. Denmark US also known for excellent soft serve ice cream. And for baked goods. There is a reason those things are called Danishes. Last time I was in Copenhagen we got quite a few things from a bakery chain called Lagkagehuset (which means the layered cake house, lagkage is a popular Danish cake filled with cream).

We never had a problem, upon debarkation from the ship because we were almost the only ones waiting at the bus stop each time, and when the bus arrived at the stop nearest to the port it was always empty since it's the last bus top before it heads back to the bus/train station.

There's also a lot more information on visiting Copenhagen in my two Northern European Cruise Trip Reports.

In the picture I included in my first post, you can see that the Train station is literally smack dab in between the airport and the Cruise Terminal. We had taken the train when we arrived so figured it would work quickly to get back to the Airport and we were right. It was a really nice train with luggage storage racks even.

We didn't feel it necessary to take the taxi all the way to the airport and pay for it. The train is more cost effective and we don't get to ride trains a lot in the US so we took advantage of the opportunity.

We had a 1PM flight out of CPH and we were off the ship and in a taxi by 9 am so we decided to skip the extra for the taxi and enjoy the train ride back.
