So DF and I were in the Disney Store today and we got to talking with a CM who owns DVC and she told us to look into it and that it would be a great investment....so

Where do I go to start looking at all the info..i.e. incentives, how it works and where the DVC locations are etc.

I have learned a lot by reading the threads here in DISboards, especially once I learned how to do a search for keywords I was interested in.

You might want to check out the Timeshare Users Group (TUG at http://tugbbs.com/forums/ ) -- for a basic understanding of different timeshare systems. It's a stretch to call it an "investment" -- it's a luxury long-term commitment to vacationing with increasing expenses, and benefits that change overtime.

And of course do a lot of reading of the DVC related info here -- including the links at the top by TSS.

DVC does maintain some resale value, which most other TS (timeshare) systems do not.

Most of us DVC owners totally love it, for lots of different reasons, but it is a big financial expense (and the costs for the vacations it encourages you to do keep going up and up as well -- gas, flying, tickets, food, etc.).

:) Read, read and read the threads here and write down points of interest. Read all the stickies and spend time on DVCNews.com. You can also purchase a Passporter DVC guide and download it to your computer. Go to the DVC site and look at all the home resorts, to get an idea of whaich resort you like.

DVC works best for folks traveling to WDW at least every other year, want to stay in deluxe accomodations, and can afford the extra cost involved in traveling to Orlando regularly. I mean DVC only gets you the room, you still have to get there, buy tickets and eat. It is the general consensus that DVC points are best used at DVC resorts. Yes you can use them at other location but the point cost for those locations are almost cost prohibitive and you would do better owning a different timeshare say if you wanted to trade a week in the Carribean.

You need to be aware of the resale market, point charts, picking a Home Resort, Banking, borrowing, and cancellation policies. It is also good if you split the purchase into smaller contracts. So if you are thinking you want 200 points, I would purchase 2-100 point contracts, titled exactly the same. That way you can leave each one to a child ore sell one off if needed. It is easier to unload a 100 point contract than a 200 point contract. I would maybe even try to get a 100, and then 2-50 point contracts. Anyway you see my point. It is also good to get a few extra points. DH and I were going to get 200 points, and ended up with 210...so we could get an extra night at times ore have a few extra if the point chart changed.

First I would like to say "investment?" how are you viewing that? I think DVC is an investment....in our future vacations, not $$. Very few people are getting what they paid per point when selling. I know for myself who just bought in that because I bought directly from Disney I would never be able to re-coop the money in a resale.

As I said it is an investment in our future vacations, it insures that DH and I have somewhere to go every year or two that is within a 24 hr drive, nice area and accommodations. You can always reduce your costs by not going to parks or dinning at Disney or even off-site by purchasing groceries. For us it is a cost effective holiday somewhere nice.

I first want to say thank you to all of you for your help....

I live in Florida about 3.5-4 hours south of WDW so the transportation is no problem...as for food for right now it is DF and I, no kiddos YET...

As far as investment I was thinking about being able to stay in an upgraded resort, we usually stay at POP...but to tell you the truth we will be doing so much research as I know that this is a BIG decision, but DF (whom I took to WDW for the first time when we started dating) seemed more interested in DVC then I am....but if it is worth it then maybe?!

I could also rent points as first (from other DVC owners) to see if this is something that I would enjoy....

Thanks again

Statr here, I have never really spoken to anyone who regretted this investement!
