Mothers of teenagers and teens themselves, I need help. My 14 year old neice tells me today that she wants to go to the Homecoming dance with friends, but doesn't have a dress. The dance is tmw so we need to go shopping in the morning and don't have time to go from store to store.

Where are some good stores that would have homecoming type dresses (but not wildly expensive.)

Since I am the one who takes DN shopping, buy my girls are only 4 and 1 year old, I am not prepared for this. Any help? :goodvibes Thanks!

When I go shopping for my Noel ball dress, I will probably be going to stores like JCPenneys. If you have any around you, I would go look there. They always have a nice selection. Or look at a MAcy's or Sears or somewhere like taht

For reasonably priced ones, try Deb, Jc Penney's, Bon Ton, Kaufmann's, or Boscov's.

The stores might even have marked them down at this point.

Good luck!!

Thanks we live in the metro Detroit area, so we have a wide selection of store. There is a JCPenny and a sears at the mall right by us so we can try that out too. There is also a DEB store. I have never been in it, but it seems to have lots of teen type dresses.

My niece used to buy her prom & special dance dresses at a place called The Deb Shop. Their stuff is stylish for that high school age group and well-priced for Mom's pocketbook!!!!!!

JC penneys had some nice homecoming dresses. my DD got hers from Lohmanns for $30.

Since there is a DEB short by you, definitely go there! They have a lot of cute and affordable dresses!

My daughter actually got two prom dresses on clearance at JC Penneys, as well as several Homecoming and Snow Ball gowns.

You live near funky and cool downtown Royal Oak! Get a cone at Oliver Twist or a dog at Jimi's Coney Island and start walking down Washington and Main streets!!

No, really they should have lots of choices at Oakland Mall. If it is nice there this weekend, I bet you would find things in downtown Royal Oak, though pricey possibly.

Growing up there I have such good memories of my paper route there in downtown and going to the stamp store, that I am sure is no longer there! It was my whole world, and funny, my perception is still that you can find anything you need there in Royal Oak!

LOL :rotfl:

Yes RO can be fun, we live near down town (around 12 mile and woodward.) and my DD goes to Preschool at St. Mary's right in down town. The homecoming Dance is for Dondero. It will be there last one since next year they close it to make it the only middle school and all the HS students will go to Kimball (renamed RO High School.)

Yes we are off to Oakland mall tmw. There is a DEB and JCpenny there, if all else fails we can try Sears. I like Sommerset mall, but I don't want to spend that $ on this (just a freshman dance, not like senior prom or anything." DN thought the $30 dress prices sounded very tempting. ;) I don't pay very well for baby sitting, but I do take her shopping!

St.Mary's! My sister's best friend is a member there. Is the good looking Priest still there?

I lived off of Lincoln on Lawson! Unfortunate they are closing Dondero. We moved to Dearborn before I would have gone there for high school.

Have fun shopping, and get a coney island for me!

Turns out D 7 likes to look at dresses online! I went to Penneys.com and I don't know if it is only online, but there was a sale from today until 10/18. They had alot of very cute dresses for under $100.00. The sale was 30% off non sale and 10% off sale items.

Cool, I was thinking about it, but afraid DN would find something she liked and not be able to get it and be disapointed. (once she gets her mind wrapped around an idea she goes with it.) She is the sweetest kid, but not the most fasion savy. (this is not a bad thing, too many teens are all about the fashion and not much more.) She would rather read and discuss harry potter (or go to WDW with us!) My kind of kid.

I don't think the preist is still at St. Mary's but the school principle is the nicest man.

I am thinking Olgas for lunch since I know what I can and can't eat there (dairy and egg free allergy diet) and I love the peasent soup. YUM!!!! DMIL even said she would wacth the younger kids so girls day out!!!!! :cheer2:

I got most of my dresses at Lazarus (now Macy's), Penny's and Dillards. Have fun! I love dress shopping!

I'm taking dd14 to look for one tomorrow, too. She's been looking online and found one on JcPenney's site. She's hoping they'll have it in the store.

Why do all the models in the homecoming section look at least to be 27 years old? This is for a 14 year old HS freshman (who tends to be on the modest side.) I hope we can find something she likes, but doesn't look old lady like (and not 27 years old either.) :confused3

We had great luck this year at JC Penney. Got a long dress for $69.00 (sale price). I didn't notice too many short formal-type dresses there, but everything else was quite nice.

Does Oakland have a Windsor. They have great homecoming dresses. We used to like Marshall Fields selection but since they were sold all the dresses are very upscale. Have fun, I love Olga's too. It's my DD favorite place and we always have to get the Peasant soup with the snackers. YUM!

Hi everyone, thanks so much for the help. We had a nice day shopping today and got a cute dress at DEB (we didn't see any thing really at JCPenny, mostly picked over by this point). It is dark blue/black with sparkles, tea lengh (I think that is what it is called, not short, not long.) Tappered (shorter in the front then back.) and very cute. Best thing was it was only 35$, and we found shoes for 13 at payless (that she loved). So it worked out very well.

So she came over and we did her make up took some pictures and found some jewlery. I even found the black dress purse her mother gave me for being an bridesmaid at her's and my brothers wedding. (My SIL died in 1998 from breast cancer) and my brother is rasing his 3 kids himself now. All the girly responisbility falls to me though. She is a really great kid and I only hope my own DD are as good when they are 14 years old. :goodvibes

Thanks for the help, sometimes being a stand in mom for a teen ager is a bit overwelliming.

Glad you found everything. We couldn't find anything at JcPenney's either, or the DEB. DD finally found one at Strawbridge. Now, we have to find shoes. She found a pair she liked at JcPenney's, but it was packed and only 3 ppl working. Couldn't get anyone to help us, so we left, but couldn't find anything anywhere else. I guess we'll be making another trip to the mall this week.

I was wondering how the shopping trip went!

Glad it was a success!
Bless you for being such a kind and generous Aunt! :goodvibes
