Hey all!
My son grew since our last trip. He's always just used a stroller since he's been small/light enough, but how he's too long for his City Mini. He's mobile, but because of fatigue issues he needs a chair for about half the day. He's 8 and about 50 lbs and 52 inches long. Not sure what chair would be the best fit for him or the best place to rent from would be. A stroller type chair would be perfect.
Thanks for any help you all can give!!

I would suggest purchasing a maclaren major. Its umbrella style and goes up to 100 pounds. Your insurance might cover it but it's not terrible expensive.

I'm sure insurance would probably pay for it, but we really wouldn't use it too often. Not often enough to justify a purchase, I don't think. I might talk to his doctor about it. Otherwise, I need to rent something here in a little over a month.

If they rent a special needs stroller, most of the standard "baby stroller" rental companies in the Orlando area seem to rent the Liberty pushchair. It's like a large jogger style; in my opinion rather large, bulky and heavy and not very practical for using on WDW transportation. Care Medical rents an umbrella-style stroller; it is similar style to the Maclaren Major but I know they told me it was a different brand, it might be an Otto Bock but I'm not positive. Orlando Medical Rentals lists several different strollers of various styles and max height/weight limits. I don't have personal experience with either company but have read good reviews of both. When we were at that point, we ended up purchasing a gently-used Maclaren Major; even though we basically only used it for vacations, it paid for itself after 2 trips. Since it was not necessary for everyday use, our insurance would not cover the purchase.

Enjoy your vacation!

Yep! Even though he's braced bilaterally (both ankles, both knees and SDO) I don't think it would be covered because we try very hard to encourage walking to build strength and endurance. Thank you! I will look into all your suggestions!

Just time for quick answer.

Look in post 2 of the disABILITIES FAQs - there is a list of companies there that rent equipment, including special needs strollers

The disABILITIES FAQs thread is near the top of this board or you can follow the link in my signature

Thanks SueM! It's been about a year since I've been on this board! I knew this info was somewhere, but wasnt' sure where to look!

You might be suorised what insurance will cover. I know someone who got this approved by Medicaid whose kid walked but had down syndrome. The nice thing about it is that it is light enough to carry around folded up when you are not using it for pushing. Even new it is only about 500 bucks. It really opened up a lot of options for us that we had just adapted to not missing like running to the store or mall at the end of a long day or a trip to the zoo without braces in the heat. My daughter is 18 and we are at the end of our third one. And one of them died death by me driving over it with the car.

Anyone have any suggestions on the best place to look into purchasing one? Should I look local or order online, etc?

Adaptive Mall is a good starting point -- they have very detailed descriptions including sizing. If purchasing through insurance, you may be required to go through a local medical supply company, who may have online info as well but stop by and talk to them as they'll know how to measure and size your options. You can purchase from them without going through insurance, too, but be aware they may not have a stroller in stock and would order it.

If looking for used, you can check your local/state re-use registry for people with special needs medical equipment. That's how we purchased ours.

I am planning on getting a new major and the cheapest place was actually Amazon. If you find it cheaper somewhere else, let me know!
