My wife and I are considering purchasing some DVC points for our 30 birthdays. We average a trip to disney at least once a year and so far this year we have gone twice! We want to purchase as many points for as cheap as possible and go to Disney the first full week of December every year. So, here is my question. Should we purchase a lot of points at V Beach or Hilton and try and book our 1 bed room at VWL 7 months out? Or, should I just purchase my points at VWL and bite the bullet and only get the points we need for the trip? :confused3 It's giving me a headache! :headache: How difficult is it when you purchase points at V Beach and try to book a 1 bd at VWL or similar? Any information or advice you could possible pass along would be greatly appreciated. :worship:

Since early December is one of the most popular times for DVCers - booking anything 3 months out is a bad plan.

At that time of year, buy points where you want to stay - not just anywhere to save money - and book when your booking window opens at 11 months.

As for where to buy those points - you will probably want to look at resales to save money.

early december is peak season for DVC. if you buy a beach resort, you may get locked out of wdw (and VWL would be even more difficult.)

if you want to stay at the VWL in december, buy there and book right at the 11 month window. seriously.

We recently bought VWL resale, and paid $74 a point. You can probably find them even cheaper now. I'm not sure there is a time of the year where you can book VWL at only 3 months out.

If you plan on staying at VWL, purchase points at VWL!! Although the price points at VB and HH are so incredibly tempting, you have to remember that there is a reason why they are so cheap. First of all, if you buy at either, there is no *guarantee* that you will be able to find a room at at Disney at your 7 month window (and, your "3 months out" might have been a typo, but I'm here to tell ya, you won't be getting a room for a week at VWL booking 3 months out in December). Remember, you are competing with every other DVC member at the 7 month mark, and, given that VWL is so popular in December, your chances are slim even if you call at the 7 month mark. Second, do the math: with their higher maintenance fees at the beach properties, you might find that you'll be spending more money over the life of your contract than if you just buy at the resort you really want to be at.

I think that every informed potential DVC member goes through this internal debate (I know I did - LOL). Run the numbers and think about long-term...you'll have a decision before you know it. Either way, happy DVC shopping!! :goodvibes

If you want VWL in December, you must own there. You'll need to make that reservation at 11 months out. The first week of December is extremely popular with members because the points are low. If you try to make an early Dec reservation at three months out, you will be lucky to get a night here and a night there, meaning moving every night.

Once you decide which resort you would like to own then I would suggest buying the points from...................................The Timeshare Store, Inc.® :rotfl:

If anyone contacts us with their name and e-mail we can add them to our distribution list so when new listings become available you will be notified. Our company e-mail is sales@dvcstore.com.

If you are able to make that reservation in December more than 7 months in advance then I would suggest owning at Wilderness Lodge.

Best of luck to you.

Another option (although a complete pain in the _______) is to get VWL points transferred into your account each year and book the trip at 11 mos, then rent out your non-VWL points.

This is dicey (at best), and you also need to keep in mind that you only get one transfer per year - so you have to make it count :lmao:

Not the ideal strategy or for the feint of heart, but still a possibility......

We are on our third DVC purchase and are currently buying 175 points at Boardwalk through the Timeshare Store. Very happy with those folks.

We struggled with where to buy and decided that we are always happy at Boardwalk.

The 11 month window will allow us a better chance to get a standard view, which costs less points.

I would not hesitate doing business with Timeshare Store. They all own DVC themselves!

Good luck!

So, I've found some points i'm interested in at VWL. :cool1: I'm awaiting contact now from the agent to get the nitty gritty on it. I believe it's a Feb use year. If everything works out with the seller and Disney with the price, when can I book a trip for Dec 6 2010? The points won't refill until Feb 1 2010, will I have a problem trying to get a reservation then? Or can I book on Jan 6 2010? I hate to be a bother but the information everyone has passed along has been very helpful.

Your UY doesn't affect when you can book. You can book any reservation 11 months out at your home resort. As long as the points you need for the reservation will be available at the time you go, you are all set.

To book your Dec 6th, 2010 trip, you can call Jan 6th, 2010 and book up to 7 days. If you want to stay longer than that, you can call each additional day and add it to the original reservation until you have what you need.

Just a note--if you plan to travel in Dec with a Feb UY, that is outside your banking window. If you ever had to cancel that trip after September 30th, you would only have until January 31st to use up those points.

Good luck and congratulations on the contract!!!

You can book 11 months prior to your check-in date at your home resort, VWL. Booking at 11 months, you shouldn't have any trouble getting what you want. That's why it's smart to buy at your favorite resort.

If you want to stay at VWL buy at VWL. This resort is one of the smaller DVC resorts and very popular.

The DVC News gives this info:

Original Opening Date: November 15, 2000
DVC Contract End Date: January 31, 2042

Rooms: 136 (max 181)
Dedicated Studio: 20
Dedicated One Bedroom: 27
Dedicated Two Bedroom: 44
Lockoff Two Bedroom:
(Each can be booked separately as One Bedroom + Studio)

45
Three Bedroom Grand Villa: 0
Buildings: 1
Units per building: 136

So if all of the lockoff 2 BR's are reserved as 2 BR's there would be only 27 one bedroom villas to be reserved. (And I would expect by the 7 month window they would all be booked.) However if WVL is your home resort you'll probably be able to access one of 45 1 BR's that are part of the lock off units. That would really increase your chance at getting a room. (27 + 44 = 71)

So like the others have said buy where you want to stay.

Just made an offer on some points at VWL. I'll let everyone know what happens!

We bought at VWL because that is where we want to stay for the holidays each year. It is one of the smallest resorts, so you really need to own there to even come close to guaranteeing getting to stay there.

I should also mention that I was able to book most of the nights I wanted at VWL this year at 6 months out, but I think this year was a fluke due to the economy. This is not the norm. I did have to waitlist 2 nights, but was able to get those in a couple of weeks.

The UY also makes a difference when referring to banking. If you were planning on going in Dec every year, I would suggest a UY after June.

I see that you put an offer in- GOOD LUCK and hope to be welcoming you home soon!

The waiting is driving me nuts and this is just to hear back from the seller. There's no telling what it will be like when I'm waiting on Disney. Hopefully everything will work out. It has a Sept use year and we would take our vaca every Dec. With it only being my family (3 total), I'll probable only be booking a studio. When my daughter gets older and wants to start bringing someone with her I'll prob have to invest in something with more points or just add on. Does anyone reading this own at the VWL and stay in a studio from time to time? How's the crowd at VWL during the Holiday season?

We own at VWL, but we never stay in studios. We're also a family of three and have only gotten a studio maybe three times in 12 years and over 25 trips. One studio at OKW, one at BWV (one and only time there, not our cup of tea) and one at BCV when they first opened. VWL is nicely themed for the holidays, so WL and VWL get lots of visitors.
