Hello,

I want to start doing pressed pennies with my girls on our next trip and was wondering where you guys get rolls of American coins from (quarters and pennies)?? I asked at my bank but they don't carry any.... can I stop at a US bank on our drive down and ask them to change $ for me even though I'm not a customer?

This feels like a dumb question but I just have no idea!

Thanks!

currency exchange at the border?

The tellers at my local branch (Royal Bank) have set aside American change for me many times. But I am a "regular" there so they see me at least once a week (often twice or more). They get quite a bit of American coins mixed in with Canadian currency, and since they accept coins at par they are happy to give them to me in exchange for their Canadian value.

You may be a customer. TD Bank is now one of the largest US banks with branches all over the States. If you are a customer up here, they are (usually) very welcoming of your TD Green Card down there. We've never had a problem finding one in New England and Florida, and I've already noted the locations for 2014 trip to South Carolina. Note that there are no "foreign bank" fees when you use your TD card in a TD machine in the US. But really, you can probably save enough from your daily purchases. Always use bills to purchase and before you know it your pockets will be bulging with coins.

If you have a car (either driving down or renting) just stop at the nearest bank. Pay cash for a roll of quarters and a roll of pennies. This is assuming that you will have some US cash on you before you leave. We always did this in the past (so I had money for laundry at the resort- not necessary now that they're credit card only).

I think we got ours from the casino. Our bank told us they couldn't give us two rolls of quarters:confused3

But I think it would probably be easiest to get them from the machines in the laundry rooms like someone else suggested. We wanted quite a few of them for tolls since we were renting a car so we needed them before we got to Disney.

This will be increasingly difficult to do. The resorts are switching over to machines (and soap dispensers) that only take credit or debit cards. POFQ has that in place not- don't know how many others have already made the switch.

I bought a roll of quarters from the front desk at 2 different hotels over the last couple of stays (Caribbean Beach and All-Star Movies, I think). They probably won't have pennies, but they're not too hard to come by. Check your piggy bank at home, you probably have more American pennies than you think :)

Could you just use Canadian pennies for the pressing, if you have the American quarters?

I have used Canadian pennies in the past and found that most machines accepted them no problem. The odd one didn't like them but that could have just been a lemon! =D

You can no longer buy rolls of Canadian pennies though. .

Thanks! Like probably thousands of other Canadians, I've got "a lot " of pennies in jars !

I know I do! Was saving them just for our trip when they discontinued them.

Hmmm come to think of it I do too. But they aren't shiny. I've heard ketchup can clean them right up!

If you're anything like us, you'll have plenty of coins by the time you arrive in Orlando. It seems like I can leave home with no American coinage and have a ton in my pocket by the end of the first day. I arrived home yesterday from a short trip to Ohio and each time I tried to use up my change I just ended up getting more.
