Actually you can purchase a PH, PHP or UPH at check in. The advantage to purchasing a PH or PHP in advance is a discount. We got ours at the Disney store, quick and easy, you can also order online or use the Disney store at MCO.
There is an advantage to getting the UPH mentioned above at check in vs when making your reservation. If you arrive late on arrival day or depart early on departure day you can drop either (and sometimes both) and not pay for a day or two of UPH that you can't use. We always arrive late in the evening so we drop arrival day you can only do this at the resort. If you are going to parks for a full first and last day then it dosen't matter when you purchase the UPH.
One day passes can be purchased at the hotel or at the park. There is no where I know of to get advance one day tickets unless maybe AAA but never have I heard of a one day pass at a discount.
We, and many others, have used www.ticketmania with great success. Also, you may want to subscribe to the monthly e-newsletter at www.mousesavers. They always have a click-through link with additional discounts beyond what is available at ticketmania's public site.
