Where to eat at HHI

It seems to me the food is allright there really isn't anything that is the greatest. maybe we should do more cooking then ordering out! But then again we are on vacation. how is the weather in july is it hot and humid? I figured it would be. Should we bring our bikes?

Cook pizza...otherwise there are lots of good places....some fantastic (especially Eat!). Posting my note again in case you missed it:

My in-laws live on HHI and I spend quit a bit of time there.

Our favorites for casual lunch or dinner:
- Fiesta Fresh (a real hidden gem...we eat here almost daily...few tourists know about it)
- Kenny B's French Quarter Cafe
- Ruan Thai
- Sea Shack
- TJ's Take & Bake Pizza

Our favorites for nicer, but not super-fancy dinner:
- Truffles Cafe or Grill (visit every trip)
- Redfish
- Seagrass Grill

Favorites for special dinner:
- Old Fort Pub
- CQ's
- Robert Irvine's Eat! (The guy from Dinner Impossible/Worst Cook in America - he lives on HHI)

We really enjoy Guiseppi's, Skullcreek Boathouse (even though we had a long wait), Dye's (but she was planning on closing at the end of this year and opening a "to go" place), and One Hot Mamma's, all of which have already been mentioned. One that hasn't been mentioned is The Chart House. It's close to Skullcreek and also has beautiful views. My DH and I ate there in 2010 for our 20th anniversary. Wonderful meal!

Places we will avoid like the plague--Kingfisher (eaten there twice; first time ok but this last time was so terrible!) and Alligator Grille (restaurant.com coupon was nice but food was horrible!).

I can't wait to go back in 2013 and try Roastfish and Cornbread. Sounds good!

What about the salty dog. I had a friend go last summer and he says the salty dog is his favorite. Also he said the crazy crab was good. Any body been to those places?

We are fans of the Crazy Crab, the one on the north end of the Island. The one in Harbour Town has a more crowded feeling. It's usually a lunch place for us, and the view can be really lovely. I am no longer a fan of the Salty Dog. It used to be a hot dog/hamburger type of place in a great location. But a few years ago, new management took over many of the restaurants in South Beach, and the ambience in all of them changed. The SDog has become much more expensive and the menu a little more upscale, but the location remains as good as always.

Restaurants that are OK near (marina) the DVC resort but don't worry if you miss them - Scotts and also Kingfishers.

For anyone that has been inside Roastfish & Cornbread - how is the interior of the restaurant? I have been told th food is excellent but driving by the building did not look too appealing. Thanks.

It's a fun environment, but food is nothing to write home about.

We were there after dark so it was a little hard to see...I don't remember much about the inside (it's like in an old house so there were multiple rooms). It was not a fancy place at all. Very casual. We actually ate outside because there was no wait to sit out there...but it was just wooden picnic tables. Nothing fancy. The food was interesting and reasonably priced tho - and that's why we went there was to try the Low Country style food.

"LowCountry Backyard" It is delicious and the service is great! We read about it here and on TripAdvisor, I think it is #3 on there. Great food, great service and reasonably priced. We ate inside but there was a large patio with live music when we went too. Try it, it is great!

Hey, another South Central Kentuckian here who loves Hilton Head Island! Can you tell me more about the LowCountry Backyard restaurant? I googled them, and their menu does not look very extensive. The intro did say the lowcountry boils and oyster roasts were coming. We love seafood, but my DH is allergic to much of it. It seemed like there were some choices for him (meatloaf and chicken, too bad no steaks), but the only seafood they had listed was shrimp and grits and crab cakes (besides the fish). How did you find their menu?

(Oh and I don't know if you are originally from SouthCentral KY or if you went to WKU, but Steamer Seafood is owned by a WKU alumni and hires many WKU graduates. We just tried them this past October and really enjoyed it. We even signed an alumni book while we were there.)

We order for our take in dinner...order 100's lol! have for lunch the next day also.
There are numerous flavors!

Salty Dog - have to visit and have a drink. It isn't the same anymore since the new mangement took over all the restraunts at the marinia.

We go to HHI every year and now skip eating at South Beach.

Still like The Crazy Crab in Harbour Town. But seafood!

When we were there in 2009, we ate at a few places. Worth mentioning is Wild Wing Cafe for a reasonably priced meal...great wings in many many flavors and good beer. It is kid friendly.

We also did the Kingfisher, which is right by the resort. It was ok. Good drinks...ok seafood...you can walk to it. It's a little adult-ish, but there are kids there...we took ours.

We went to the Frosty Frog in the Coligny Plaza for some very strong frozen drinks and some appetizer type food. They serve pizza among other stuff. They have those giant slushie machines with different frozen beverages with different strengths of alcohol. It is kid friendly, but a bit of a dive type atmosphere (or it was when we were there).

We don't eat at any of the South Beach restaurants any more. The pirate place kitty-korner from the general store used to have this soft-shell crab that my DH loved. Not any more. The last time we went to the Salty Dog, my husband looked at the bill and was surprised by a $14 tuna sandwich-type entree at lunch. We do eat at Hudson's for lunch at least once every trip. The view is lovely. The restaurant is pretty rustic, and the food is consistent. We haven't been to the Boathouse since it changed hands, but it's on our list. We had brunch once at the Black Marlin and were disappointed, although the setting is nice. We usually just eat at Woody's next door.

Have to disagree in a friendly way. We really like Pazzo for pizza. The Brick Oven was a Great place for Pizza but I think it has fallen to it's death.

The good places are there, but, they are somewhat hidden.

I don't think there's anything wrong with having pizza one night on vacation regardless of where you are. It is (usually) quick and a reasonable price. Many people need to stay on some sort of a budget and don't want to spend $100 or whatever on a meal.

When we went to Europe this past summer I really wanted to have some fantastic meals while we were in Italy - I had such visions of the pasta in my head but we still had pizza like 2x because of the cost (the USD was really tanking when we were there and even a sandwich often ran almost $20 pp once converted). And we DID have THE BEST pizza in Sorrento!! OMG - so now I know there is nothing quite like an authentic Napoli pizza with fresh San Marzano tomatoes & fresh herbs. It was to die for...and we were glad we tried it. If I had remained stubborn about what we ate and said NO PIZZA we'd have missed out on one of the best meals we had over the 2 weeks.
