Budget boarders, I need your help!

We are moving into a new house, and this house will have an extra bedroom. We figure if we set up the extra bedroom as a guest room we could convince DH's parents to come down and visit us, instead of us always shleping the kids up to visit them. I figure I can buy mattress and box spring for less than the cost of 4 plane tickets and at the same time skip the "joy" of traveling with two young kids.

The only issue is that we will likely only be living at the house for about a year, and we don't know where will be moving next, or if we'll be able to have an extra bedroom in our next place. I don't want to spend a ton of money on a bed that we might only be using a few times, but I want to make sure it is comfortable.

Where can I find a cheap mattress that is reasonable quality?

If you have IKEA near you, try there. Or Walmart. About $239 for a queen there.

Try Furniture Row! We got a mattress for our guest bedroom that is supposed to be comparable to our Simmons BeautyRest Black. So far, our guest have slept very comfortably.

Online!!!! Memory Foam mattresses are really popular now (we have one from Bed in a Box...) and you can get them on Wal-Mart's website or Amazon for really cheap. The Amazon mattresses are really well-reviewed, so you have a good feel about what you are buying.

Thank you guys! We do have an Ikea nearby, but I didn't realize they sold mattress! I was already planning to go on thursday to check out furniture for DS#2 room in the new house, so I'll be sure to check out the mattress as well! :goodvibes

If your mattress is getting a bit old....I'd move it into the guest room, and buy yourself a new one. Much more worth the investment!

Be careful with high expectations though. Some people just don't travel. It doesn't matter if they're coming to a comfortable sleeping arrangement or not. You could spend the money, and they could still expect you to come to them.

Given your specific scenario, I think I would just tell them that you have an extra bedroom and get them to commit to staying with you before you buy a mattress, especially if you may have to move it/get rid of it in a year anyway. No point in wasting the money if they are never going to use it or find some other excuse not to come stay with you.

I hear really good things about IKEA mattresses from people on a budget who say that's all they'll buy anymore.
