Where to be a 'snowbird' in Florida?

My mom, a senior citizen, would like to rent a place in Florida for 2 or 3 months (Jan - March). I tried doing a search online, but I'm not familiar with Florida..... other than Orlando!

Can anyone recommend some areas/towns to look in? She wouldn't want to be more than 15 - 30 minutes to the beach, and I'm thinking a 55 and over place would be best since there would be activities for her and people to socialize with.

If anyone knows of any good rental agencies (or ones to avoid) that would be helpful, too.

Thanks for any info!

My Aunt & Uncle stayed recently on an island, and I think it's near Clearwater. They saw lots of condos and retirement communities and said that when they retire, that's where they're going. They said it was also the best place in Florida for collecting cool seashells.

I don't recall the name, sorry! I'm in Orlando, and almost NEVER go to the "west" coast of Florida, so I don't know much about it.

I'll keep thinking, and if it comes to me, I'll post again.

Might be Sand Key Island which is right off of Clearwater. We've stayed at the Radisson there. Further down the strip, it's nothing but condos and cottages. Seemed nice enough! I wouldn't mind retiring there one day!
