Where should I go?

Long story short, it is about time for me to move back to the states. I am very lucky to be young, single and have a great job that just requires me to be in a relatively big city (if you have a decent airport, or within 30 miles). Due to some hardships on other fronts, home doesn't exist anymore, so I need to make a new one.

I enjoy warm weather (dislike the cold), river kayaking and would like to buy a home.

If I were to move anywhere, I would pick:

Savannah
Charleston
Somewhere in Maine.

Maine might not fit your "don't like the cold" but it's beautiful.

I agree. It's very affordable. My only question is-- will your job let you transfer to wherever you want? Or are you self-employed?

Charleston is beautiful, but not inexpensive.

I live north of Atlanta and I love it. It has it's good and bad points like anyplace though.

Positives
-Cost of living is average to below average depending on how far away from the city you live
- Weather is hot in the summer with very mild winters
- Lots of outdoor activities (hiking, biking, river rafting, kayaking, golf, etc)
- Has a lot of entertainment options (major sports teams, concerts, ballet, symphony, clubs, museums, live music, aquarium, etc)
- Busiest airport in the world so you can get to a lot of places on direct flights

Negatives
- Traffic!!!
- Living downtown where the action is expensive

If you are looking for a smaller town, Athens, GA is a great college town and not too far from Atlanta

Of course, there's always Orlando!

I agree with the Atlanta area or Savannah. There are places the kayak and not much cold weather.

Ya beat me to it! Anywhere in the metro Atlanta area would work for you. THe weather is mostly temperate--we've having a heat wave here now, but it's not as hot here as it is in Michigan! Our version of cold weather is sweatshirts & jeans & a jacket you bought 10 years ago that looks like it's hardly been worn(because it hasn't!) NO snow boots! No snow shovels! And when we do get the exceptional 2" of snow, we all take the day off!

Austin is a good idea (not that I don;t like Portland--I am just thinking OP said no cold, personally I will take cold over hot any day).

Boise is great, it fills your requirement but it does get cold.....

My contract is about up and it is time for me to move. Cindy knocked it, I'm a fed. I plan on staying in my job but would switch if a better opportunity came along. This is unlikely however as I am currently in a job that caps out at GS 12 and am only 24. (Will be GS 12 on 27th birthday).

California is out of the question for 2 reasons. 1. I want to buy a house, 2. I can't bring myself to go back.


The more I look, the more I think Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina would be a good fit. I would like to avoid horrible traffic and have heard awful things about Atlanta.

I live in Union County NC. I LOVE it here!
The airport is about 25 minutes from me, and it is a major hub for US Airways. The city of Charlotte is about 15 minutes from me. I am able to attend professional and college sporting events all around me throughout the year, and they are all within minutes from my house. It is beautiful here! Plus we have the mountains to the west of us and the ocean/beaches to the east of us. WDW is about 8 hours away.
