Unusual in the best way was Giraffe Manor in Kenya, where we got married, and the resident giraffes came to the balcony/bedroom windows in the morning looking for treats.
Unusual in the “how did we end up here?” kind of way was thanks to a series of unfortunate events that left us spending the night in a stranger’s farmhouse in Costa Rica. They didn’t speak a word of English and we could only cobble together a few sentences in Spanish. We washed up using a bucket in the outdoor kitchen. Our room was a sparse affair, painted hot pink, containing only a small bed, a sewing machine, and a hair extension tacked to the wall. The mattress was stuffed with hay and after an hour or two of sleep we’d sink to the bottom and need to refluff it. We did that periodically throughout the night until the howler monkeys awoke us for good at sunrise.
