I have a travel insurance rider attached to my homeowners policy. It is called 'Travelwell 30' (I believe there's also Travelwell 60 etc) and it covers each of the 4 members in my home for unlimited trips to the U.S per year as long as each trip is no longer than 30 days.
There is a deductible..I think it's $200 CAD but it has been a godsend for us. When the Dr appt or medical treatment is minor..I charge it to my American Express card and am reimbursed in full.
The policy costs approx $82 per year and is on top of our policy through ING.
On my BMO/Mosaik card we have the rider you can get on the card that will cover you for trips that are paid for/booked on the card. I know its under $100 a year. We don't bother as we have coverage for out of country from work but we have the portion that gives you cancellation insurance, thelft loss etc. It is $69 per year and two years ago I lost a pair of prescription sunglasses on our second day in Florida just before getting on the Magic.
I left them in an Olive Garden Restaurant
Anways I wrote them off but a few months later while reviewing our CC bills I remembered the coverage.
I sent in the papers, and because I was on holidays, had the flight and cruise on the card I was reimbursed $330 for the glasses.
Best investment I made.
The coverage also is good for extra insurance for car rentals.
