Where is a pet peeve thread when you need one?

I saw that on the news last night! Wowza. I will give you a pass since you're Canadian, I don't expect you to know all 50 states. Here in the US (at least, this was my experience in elementary school), I think most of us were taught the state song to memorize them. "Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut....." I can still hear the tune in my head.

My kids walk around singing that constantly. I think my middle one is learning it and the first grader is picking it up from her. A few years ago my middle one learned a song that lists every president we've ever had in order. I love that they know those things. I tell them to remember to sing it occasionally so they don't forget.

Looks like we are in for a very narrow but significant band of storms.
Iowa City area is getting lots and lots of rain, changing to snow but only 1/2 inch. But just 90 miles north, around Waterloo, looks like 3 - 6 inches, with blizzard conditions, including 30 - 50 mph winds!

Sigh. It was almost 50 and sunny yesterday. And to add insult to injury, we are supposed to go back to the deep freeze (-5 to -10) next week.

Thanks, Deb! I'm in Cedar Falls, so right in the thick of things. Tonight should be fun. Right now it's sleeting/raining, but the snow is supposed to start in the next hour or so. I'm SO OVER winter!!

"Fifty nifty United States..." Is taught in 3rd grade at our school. That song drives me bonkers!

Oooh, I just thought of another one.

The word/concept of bullying. Can we all agree that it's WAY WAY overused in situations where it doesn't apply?! Just because I disagree with you or something you said, or even if I don't like you, doesn't mean I am a bully. The overuse of it cheapens when ACTUAL bullying takes place.

I'm up north of Cedar Rapids. Rained like mad here for a bit - thunder, lightning, sleet, the whole 9 yards. I'm SO over winter as well.

As far as pet peeve's go, I'd have to say my #1 is when people use the phrase "all the sudden". Really?

Other annoyances:

When people are in the right lane at a stoplight, with their blinker on (turning right) and wait for the light to turn green before they go.

People who leave their blinker on for miles and miles.
My kids and I have fun with this one - especially on the interstate. "I think he should be pulling into the median any moment now...nope, not quite yet. Now? Nope, soon though."

Leggings as pants. I've been seeing WAY too much of that lately. It doesn't matter if your wearing the tall "cute" boots. They are still not pants.

When we were stationed overseas, our major TV provider was AFRTS (American Forces Radio and Television Service), which wasn't permitted by local laws to air commercials, so they filled in the spaces with recruitment pitches, safety PSAs, etc. My favorite was the Great American States quiz. They showed a picture of something particular to that state with a hint about the answer, another picture and fact, then the outline of the state and the capital (capitol?) city. Example: picture of the Chesapeake Bay with the narrator extolling the virtues of this state's blue crabs. Then a picture of an Oriole and a Raven, advising the the major sports teams were named after birds. Then the outline of the state and the fact that the capital is Annapolis. Then the big reveal! MARYLAND!

I was embarrassed at how few I knew until they said the capital (we learned them all in 5th grade and I somehow managed to retain most of that info). But as "commercials" go, they were kind of fun, and our neighbor's two-year-old son memorized most of them.

A little OT, but kind of fits in with the states thread.

I can't tell you how many times I've tried to figure how which way you are going as you walk toward me on the sidewalk, because you are veering all over the place.

I want to see people's faces, not the tops of their heads.

This thread is conjuring up a lot of memories! DD#1 managed to pass a civics test in HS by singing (quietly, to herself) the Preamble to the Constitution, which she learned from School House Rock. Anyone remember that show? Both my DDs loved it! I often said that if someone would put algebra and chemistry to music, my DDs could have been doctors!

Oh, yeah, this a pet peeves thread. One of mine (and I have many!) is sitting in a restaurant in the line of sight of a man in a sleeveless tank top. There are few things less appetizing than a hairy man's hairy pits, especially when he makes NO effort to keep his arms down! GROSS!

This shouldn't be a peeve. This is awesome. Next time walk straight at them until they notice. Kind of like playing chicken. You can sometimes scare the crap out of them!

I can explain this. If you ask someone "how are you today" and they dont answer, its probably because they've been asked the very same question in the previous 20 stores they've visited that day. It gets tiring. At least for me. Imagine, in every store "hi how are you today?" ...."fine thanks"...."is there anything i can help you with today?"...."no im just looking thanks". Imagine repeating that in all 20 stores you've visited? it gets a bit annoying. Thats my guess as to why some might not respond. I normally just reply with a quick "fine thanks". And leave it at that.

Your absolutely right. BUT even a quick fine thanks is better then some of the responses I get.

Reminds me of a story from not too long ago.

One of the supervisors was walking through the plant with his face buried in his phone. Another worker had a bag full of eggs as he sold eggs to everyone in the plant. He placed the bag of eggs, 4 cartons of them, right in line with where the other guy was walking with his face buried in his phone. He kicked the eggs about 20 feet down the aisleway.

When asked why he stuck his eggs in the walkway in front of the phone guy, he replied, "I don't care, they were his eggs!"

Yup. I cycle daily on a paved bike trail out in the middle of nowhere along the river for exercise. I hardly ever see anyone but one particular day, I'm cycling along and there are 4 young girls walking the path. They were side by side stretched across the path and all 4 were buried in their phones. I stopped my bike and just stood there on the right side of the path. They kept coming and just before they ran into me standing there, I gave the usual, "coming through." Scared the daylights out of them.

I have gotten quite a few chuckles reading this thread. I share several pet peeves.

My pet peeve: People who use invoke HIPAA as an excuse to not give information or worry they are violating some major law. I was in a store the other day and the salesperson told an older man the she could not help him with a credit card problem because she could not contact the company because of HIPAA.

HIPAA is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. Unless you are a healthcare provider AND electronically bill, you are not obligated to follow HIPAA regulations. Yes, you can talk about Aunt Joan's gallbladder surgery with your friend. You don't have to whisper and say, "I'm probably violating HIPAA, but..." You are not violating HIPAA, unless, of course, you are Aunt Joan's medical provider. You can talk to someone about your own medical records. The school is not covered by HIPAA. It only covers healthcare providers' handling of information. Drives me nuts.

BTW, I, too, hate undercooked potatoes.
