We would like to fit in a day or two in the Traverse City area. (I've been there many times). However, we might need to stay somewhere en route (perhaps central or southwest Michigan). I'm looking for a nice place/town where we would actually spend part of the day (rather than just arriving at a Motel 6 in the middle of the night). Any suggestions of a nice place to stay over? Normally we would drive it in one day, but circumstances probably won't allow that this time. Thanks for your help! :D

I was gonna suggest Frankenmuth myself.:D

I'm only about 45 minutes from Frankenmuth if I can be of any assistance

I see that you are in Indy. I don't think that I would go to Traverse City from the east side of the state which is where Frankenmuth is located, it's a bit out of the way. I would either go straight up and stay in Lansing (kind of boring) or go up the west side of the state and stay in Muskegeon. It's very pretty on that side of the state and you could do many things. You could go to Holland and see the windmill or go to the sand dunes on Lake Michigan. Another thing you could do if you like this sort of thing is go to Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. Depending on when you will be there they have concerts www.bluelake.org. It's very pretty and they have an outdoor shell. Also in Muskegeon is Michigan Adventure, I haven't ever been there but it's a small amusement park.

I hope that this give you a few ideas of things to do. Like I said from Indy I wouldn't go up to Frankenmuth, it's really out of the way.

If you are going to go up the West side of the state, you could try Holland or Grand Haven and go to the beach.

You could also stop in Ludington. All of these towns would have the beach and shops. There are also several good places to eat in each of these towns.

I probably wouldn't drive over to Frankenmuth and then back over to the other side of the state and up to Traverse City.

We drive through the middle of Michigan to get to Traverse City but I prefer driving up the coast.

I would also recommend some place like Holland. Check out www.holland.org, which will give you a sample of the place.

If you're into beer, the New Holland Brewing Company brews up some very good selections.

Grand Haven (1st choice) or Holland (2nd). Both have great shopping and restaurants. If you're going on a Sunday EVERYTHING in Holland is usually closed. Muskegon isn't that nice.

Just saying hi!:wave2: We are on our way to TC this Sunday. We are staying with family in W. Bloomfield along the way, then stopping in Frankenmuth for lunch . Sorry I can't recommend a place on your way though.

Hey, Lansing isn't boring!

But I do agree that Holland is a great place to visit. You might also consider Saugatuck or South Haven. Very pretty, lots of shops, and great beaches. We have a cottage between these two towns--my mom's up there right now. Wave when you drive by!

The Bavarian Inn,frankenmuth, its a great place,5 pools, mini golf, walk across the bridge ,have dinner or lunch!Great fudge by the red light on the corner, next to a toy store(i forget the name)Hmmm ,i love Frankenmuth!!

I have heard that there are alot of places along Lake Michigan that are beautiful. Would you be heading that far west though? I have gone from KC to Mich by way of Indianapolis and I was going to Detroit, but I recall going through Dayton, though not fun and may be too close to your starting point.

Hi. Great suggestions already!! The west side of the state along Lake Michigan is beautiful!! However, if you want a straighter shot and probably quicker, I would recommend going up 27 maybe to Mt Pleasant........and the nice "little" casino/resort they have there!! Wonderful place if you like that sort of thing!!!;) :teeth:

btw......two of my sons are also heading to TC this Sunday. They are going to a camp up there.

My youngest DS has been to the above mentioned Blue Lake Camp over in Muskegon. Very nice area!!

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! Now I can start figuring this out! :D

Depending on your family and whether you have kids or not, a good place to stop midstate is Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort in Mt Pleasant. The hotel is INCREDIBLE and there is a fabulous casino , spa and entertainment onsite

Frankenmuth would be my vote. If you are going Sun-Thurs, the Drury Inn has a great rate which includes breakfast and happy hour. You have to call direct and not the 800 number and ask for the discounted price. You can find the number on the Frankenmuth web site or Drury Inn site. It might be a little out of the way but it is a fun stop!

We like stopping at Silver Lake, MI. It is where those Dune Rides are that you always see advertised. Check out www.duneswaterfrontresort.com We have stayed here & it is nice & clean for a stopover.

So where are you staying in TC?? I'd love to go up there this summer, but don't think we will be able to swing it.
