So next year I am turning 50 :ssst: I want to do something special with my two children (25 & 22 ) to celebrate :cool1: I was widowed 4 yrs ago and still regret that we didn't do something special for my DH for his 40th, figured we'd make it extra special for the 50th, but never got the chance :worried: So I want to make a nice memory for my children, but can only spend between 5,000 and 10,000. What should/can we do? A trip to disney? Or something new? We have never been on a cruise or to any resort other than disney. Should we book an all-inclusive in Mexico or ??? I love all the wealth of knowledge my dis friends have :goodvibes So...what would you do...

Just had to share, my daughter just got engaged
Looks like she just decided what my special 50th year celebration will be, I get to help plan a wedding for Spring 2007 , that should take care of $10,000. :faint: Seriously though, I can't think of a better memory :goodvibes

How about a land and sea Disney Combo? You could actually go out of country for that price if your kids have interests. We are going to Ireland next month and only plan to spend around $5000 for the 2 of us. Anything you do with your kids I am sure will be memorable and magically no matter where you go. Sit down together and decide as a group where you want to go.

We leave in 5 days for the Dominican Republic. I love Disney but there is a whole world out there. I hope to take my family some day to Europe. My Mom Rest her sole MADE me go LOL.

I would think a nice trip to Europe would be in the cards for 10. Sounds great, Katypop. :thumbsup2

I'm with Noodles. I'm thinking it would be a nice 40th birthday present for myself!

A long-multicontinent cruise would cost about this, and my grandparents went on one for their 50th wedding anniversary. Went from Los Angeles all down the Mexican Riveira, and then north up the Pacific coast ending up in Anchorage.

I would put Mexico last on my list for a trip like this. I think any of the cruises mentioned would be good but my first choice would be somewhere in Europe or Australia/New Zealand. $10,000 is quite a lot for 3 people so you could really do something fantastic. You could easily spend 2+ weeks in Europe traveling to several countries for that price.

Personally, I would go with Europe or Australia. So much to see and do! With $10K you could always do 2 trips!!!

There was a deal for a trip to Australia for $999 that included airfare and accomodations in a couple of cities. I'll have to see if I can find the info for you.

Whatever you decide to do, I'm sure that it will be a wonderful trip/memory for you and your kids!

Thank you everyone for all of your ideas , now you've got me all excited at the idea of planning this :woohoo: I hadn't even considered Europe as I didn't think three of us could travel there with airfare, etc and stay in my budget. Looks like it's time to do some research.
Any more ideas, I love hearing them, although I'm not sure they will help me...I want to do them all!

I saw on Travelocity that they had tickets to Frankfurt, Germany for $550 or something like that. Often tickets to London are in the $300 range. Sometimes it is less expensive to fly to Europe then California for us.

A lot of people seem to think Europe is very out of reach price-wise. But honestly, it can be done fairly inexpensively. There are lots of resources out there to help you. A good guidebook to Europe can give you ideas of where you'd like to go, or maybe there's some city that's always been a dream? Paris? Rome? Athens? London?

Happy planning!

Okay, I just priced tickets on travelocity to get an idea of how much to England or Italy, both are in the $1000 range each, for just one ticket :earseek: Looks like it is more costly to travel from Canada

What time frame did you put in for your tickets? If you put in some distant date, they will be more expensive. See how much tickets for say early June are and they will probably be less expensive.

I just did a search from Ontario to London for tickets through August and they came up in the $488-550 range. For the same time period Ontario to Frankfort is about $500 and Rome is $700ish.

What about going to Hawaii for a couple of weeks? I spent two weeks last year in Hawaii to celebrate my 50th birthday and it was a blast. :thumbsup2

I would go to Hawaii. I have been there three times and I just love it there. We always go in the winter, I love getting away from the cold and relaxing on the beach.

Is there somewhere you've always wanted to go, but never had the chance to go?

Now's the time to look into that option, if so. :)

My DH will be turning 50 this year and we are planning a trip to Egypt over Thanksgiving. You can get a 8-9 day package including airfare from New York, hotels, tours, and a 3-4 day nile cruise for about $2000 per person. Of course, you would have to get to New York. The weather when we want to go will be in the 70's. It will be exotic but definitely memorable.
