I had braces when I was in elementary then middle school, and I remember my mom coming to school one day and going through the trash dumpster looking for my retainer because I left it on the lunch tray...

So where is the worst/weirdest place you lost your retainers?

The trash can at the mall. My mom and I were shopping and stopped at the food court for some lunch. I wrapped my retainer up in a napkin and set it on my tray - I don't even know why I wrapped it up, I think I didn't want other people to see it and be grossed out. :confused3 Anyway, I dumped the tray. I didn't realize I lost it til the next day, so we had to get a new one made.

In a forest in the northwoods of Wisconsin. My family and I were traveling around northern Wisconsin looking for resorts we might like to stay at the following summer (exciting). When we stopped at one, I decided to stay in the car and have a snack. I took my retainer out and wrapped it in a napkin and set it on the rear ledge behind the back seat. After my snack I got out to roam around and sometime after that my brother-in-law decided to throw away trash in the car.

About fifty miles later, I remembered I had to put my retainer back in and when to reach for it behind the seat and it was gone. We had to drive back up north to that resort and thankfully it was still in the garbage can. I was in A LOT of trouble to say the least!! :rolleyes1

I grind my teeth at night so I have a mouth guard (very similar to a retainer) that I need to wear. I have not been wearing it because I have been sick and it makes it difficult to breathe when you can't breathe through your nose and have this plastic thing in your mouth lol

Anyway for about a week straight I would wake up every morning and find my mouthguard under my pillow. I have no recollection of how it ended up there. I have found it at the end of my bed in the blankets and under my cat.

I wear a mouth guard too, and I have occasionally found it under my pillow as well. ;) Usually it just winds up on the floor though, haha.

Thank goodness, I have yet to lose my retainers. I am in my 30's and I still wear my retainers most nights. I was told I have to wear them at night for LIFE since my teeth were so crooked before braces!!

I will never be paroled from retainers!

My sister lost hers at my house. We looked everywhere- picked through the garbage even! We found it one year later, in a tin, inside of our Xmas decorations. The tin was supposed to be holding ornament hooks! My only guess is that ds (toddler at the time) put it in there!

When I was a kid I put my retainer in the front pocket of my smocked shirt before eating a piece of candy. Then I jumped double dutch rope with my friends. I remembered that night about 10:00pm as I was getting ready for bed. Ran to the laundry basket, but the retainer was not in my shirt pocket. My sister and I went outside and down the street in our pj's with a flashlight to the place where we were jumping rope with friends and found my retainer in the dirt. Our mom never knew. ;)

Last summer when we were at Disney, DD left her retainer wrapped in a napkin on our tray at the bakery on Main Street. DH didn't know her retainer was in a napkin and dumped the tray. DD remember about her retainer after we left and had walked a block away. We ran back to the bakery and started digging through the trash and found it.

I think I should win the award for weirdest...We had a coal/woodburning stove when I was growing up (you can see where this is going, right?) and I put my retainer in a napkin (what was I thinking?!?!) so I could have a handful of popcorn before bed. Went to bed, and remembered about the retainer, ran downstairs, and lo and behold, no retainer. My dad asked me what I was looking for and I said a napkin I forgot to throw out (not telling him the retainer part). He told me not to worry about it he threw it in the stove .

As I was threatened within an inch of my life about losing the retainer, I never told them I was missing it. And since I only had to wear it at night, they never asked. I went for my final check up and the orthodontist told me "great, looks like you're wearing your retainer" , and that was the last I heard of it.... phew. Escaped without a scratch. :rolleyes1 And no, my teeth didn't move.

I have a night mouth guard, and at the time I got it the dentist specifically warned to keep it out of the reach of dogs. Well some time one night I must have taken it out in my sleep and Rover got it.

I woke up to the sound of crunching where the dog had taken part of one side off - however it turned out it was then more comfortable as it was not pressing on the back of my mouth.

I wore it for a couple of years as a dog chewed guard (they were OOP $800 so I was not in a hurry for a new one) until Rover got it again - there was not much left then.

The dentist was a bit offended when I brought back the dog chewed guard and told him that it had become more comfortable after the first modification...

I threw mine out at Fazoli's. Had to dig through spaghetti/coke/breadstick mess to find it, and never did.

I lost my retainer down a storm drain while playing outside with friends. We were able to retrieve it with some string and a paperclip as a hook.

My mom has a picture of me and my friends looking down at it trying to figure a way to retrieve it.

My mom also works as an operating room nurse, so once we saved the retainer, she brought it into work and sterilized it in the autoclave! It shrunk.

My orthodontist gave me the award for the strangest place to lose and find a retainer!

DS15 lost his at the beach. It was loose and when a big wave hit him, it popped right out!

I think the retainer boxes our ortho gives out are a great idea. When he had to wear his during the day, he would keep the box in his pocket and pop the retainer in there to eat. It's a lot harder to throw away a green box accidently than it is to throw a napkin. Now that he only wears it at night, it stays in the box in his room. The cats play with the box, but can't get to the retainer.

I have not lost mine before. Although, when I sleep with it in, it falls out and I find it at the bottom of my covers :confused3
