Where else to go on holidays ( vacation )

We are a family of four from Ireland that have been to WDW a few times and love holidaying in the US. We would love to visit some were else but have no real idea were to start. We want to bring the boys to New York and then travel on to other places, We would most likely fly in and out of JFK or Newark. We would travel in the summer, love disney and theme parks history,Horse riding and always have active holidays, We also enjoy camping and myself and the boys are involved in scouting. My husband does the driving but is not willing to drive in american big cities but will drive in smaller towns and has driven in orlando. Any ideas, We most likely want to stay on the east coast.

Well if you like theme parks, there is Hershey Park in Pennsylvania http://www.hersheypa.com/town_of_hershey/mission_statement.html, that is a nice amusement park (very small compared to Disney, but nice) and they have camping in the area http://www.campwithrusty.com/index2.html. If you like history, Gettysburg is also in the area:http://www.gettysburg.com/. I can also advise you where NOT to go if you are in the NY/NJ area-DO NOT go to Great Adventure (Six Flags) amusement park! It's overpriced and undersupervised! Last I heard, not very clean either!! Like Blondie said, Boston and Maine are very nice (actually I have never been to Maine but I know alot of people who have been there and love it). I usually go to Cape Cod, Mass. in the summer, great for beaches http://www.capecodchamber.org/. Also if you like camping the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York are beautiful http://www.adirondack.net/ or http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/do/camping/. The New England States are wonderful. Boston is very historical.

Valley Forge and Gettysburg in PA. Harper's Ferry in West Virginia is very picturesque and historical. Lots of history in Virginia and around Washington, DC, as well as tons of camping.

How about STONE MOUNTAIN PARK in Georgia! It has wonderful camping opportunities, along with a little miniature theme park. I left you the link above. VERY easy city to drive in. Anymore questions, just ask.

So Wahshington DC would not be to your DH's liking with traffic? Too bad, I think the Smithsonian is not to be missed! I have only been to DC on the East Coast.

Too bad you are not thinking further west, as a good sidetrip (but NOT WORTH THE ENTIRE TRIP) is to Marceline Missouri, a small town just about the middle of the country. Why do you ask? It is the childhood home of Walt Disney. The owner of the Disney museum they have there is the mother of the woman who owns the property where Walt's Wishing tree is. It is part of the museum tour and she gives you directions out there (it is the edge of town) and you can lie under the very tree where Walt had his wishes, hopes and dreams!

Thanks to everyone for the information with a country so vast there is so much to do. Our holidays for the last few yars have been WDW, Paris, London and camping around Ireland. With them all we visit museums, Castles and any theme parks we can find. We were thinking of williamsburg or york town, but I am not sure maybe we will do New York and another City one with good Public transport and lots to see, I was thinking possibly Washington. The children love to visit places that turn up on TV or films

My dream holiday would be in a RV just driving and seeing the whole country, maybe if we win the Lotto.
