Is it private, or in a public line somewhere? Would anyone mind giving me a brief overview of the physical scenario? Is it indoors?

it happens at Guest resolution at the parks so MK EPCOT it is one long counter ( or I am pretty sure it is the same at EPCOT) at hollywood studio it is little tables I have never been to animal kingdom park one most of them are in doors altho I have been there one time when the DAS was down so there was someone stating out side giving people the old cards and hand writing it out.

if you are concerned about privacy I would not be too worried most people when inside are talking to someone at GR and they are not listening to what you have to say. if you do not want your children to hear what you are saying you could have them off to the side until they need to take there pictures and at that point there should be no more taking about why you need the DAS card.

Thank you! I can bring a stroller in there right? I'm more worried about leaving my husband and kids alone while I do the talking, or if it's in an area where he can keep the kids in a stroller or keep them busy. I definitely don't want to talk about it in front of my kids. I'll probably get upset and cry, having to explaining all, and I don't want to do that in front of them.

you can live your kids in the stroller if you do not want to talk about your kids needs in front of your kids tell the first person ( there is a GR person in line that will ask what are you hear for) you can tell that person I need a DAS for my child but I do not want my children to hear what I say can my husband stand off to the side with my children I think they can point your husband to an area that he can stand with them the hole thing dose not take long I know for me it usely is I have ______ problems and in lines this is what happens to me so just a few sentences and most of the time they stop me at I have ________ and you do not need to talk that loud just loud enough for the CM to hear you

I hope that helps but it really is not a long conversation at all I think getting the picture taken and the card printed takes longer.

Guest Relations inside the parks have long counters. As the other poster mentioned, the Studio has some small 'pod' desks. Guests are asked to wait in line in an area away from the desk until they get to the front and there is a CM free. That gives more privacy when you are talking to the CM. The stations are several feet apart and the CMs are usually spread out a bit.
If it is busy, there is also a CM talking to people in line - some people are just looking for things that can be taken care of easily, like maps, buttons or a piece of information.
Sometimes, a guest requesting DAS will be pulled to the side, outside of the line to deal with.

You can bring a stroller in to Guest Relations at all parks. MK has stairs to the front door, but there are ramps to doors on each side. The others are at ground level.
Your family don't have to be right there while you are talking to the CM. They will need to have their Magicbands or tickets scanned as part of the process of linking those to your the DAS to your ticket or Magicband. They don't necessarily be up by you if the DAS is for you.

You don't need to talk about your medical condition or go into great detail. The CMs need to know what your issues or concerns with waiting in the actual line are, not your medical condition or things that are not related to waiting in line.

If you haven't seen it, there is a WDW DAS thread stuck near the top of this board. The actual thread is from before and right after DAS was put into place. The first post is kept up to date, but don't bother reading the other posts.

You will not have to explain everything, just describe your needs as it applies to waiting in the queue area. You are asking to be allowed to wait elsewhere, so just describe why you or your child need to wait elsewhere.

They'll need to take a photograph of the person(s) for whom the DAS is issued, so they will need to be at least present.

I've seen suggestions that you write it down if you don't want to speak out loud and ask the cast member to read your note. Remember it's only related to needs, not to a diagnosis or a specific description of the medical condition.
