We have a Dell and it comes with a pictures feature and will save them, BUT, if I need an html link to send a picture, I can't do it.

What do you use for your online picture share?

I admit I am really UN-savey when it comes to computers and anything electronic. I am learning, but the learning curve is BIG!

So, as you recommend something, keep that in mind.

Thanks,

Dawn

I save my photos in 'My Pictures' on my Dell. I use Outlook Express for my e-mail so when I want to send a photo via e-mail I right click the photo in My pictures and a menu pops up- send to e-mail recipient is one option- I click it and send from there. Otherwise I send it as an attachment thru my Comcast mail. For file sharing I have Photobucket and just recently tried Smugmug. Both work fine. Smugmug works faster on my computer for some reason, tho.

I store my pictures on my c drive and use a program called ACDSee to brouse them and sort them. I like the program it's easy to use. I also back my pictures up onto cd or dvd that way if my harddrive goes poof I dont loose my pictures. Here is the link for the program. http://store.acdsee.com/store/acd/DisplayProductDetailsPage/productID.78701300/Currency.USD

I use 2 different web sources for storing pictures. webshots and photobucket. Photobucket is best for posting pictures on forum sites. I do use webshots for albums though.

I've actually had dvds go poof on my when I try to read it a year later hence I don't really trust dvds. I don't actually trust anything to store my photos. There's something to be said about negatives...so much safer. Anyway, I'm so paranoid that I back up my photos on 2 external hard drives. I always make sure they're stored in two different hard drives. If one goes kaput, at least I have another copy.

I went a bit nuts recently. I've got 4-500 Gig external hard drives and a 1 terrabyte external hard drive sitting on the floor next to me...all waiting for photographs to be backed up. I got them on sale.... never hurts to stock up.

If I was really on the ball, the external hard drives would be stored in different locations...one in the house and one at work so that if something happened to one location, the other would still be safe. I haven't got the energy to go that far yet.

I store in either my G, H or I partition of my primary HDD, (wife's stuff on G, mine on I and H is the catchall drive) then I back up to an additional HDD (J) in the computer, then back up to each of 2 external drives, so basically store in 4 locations. Overkill ?, probably but I generally sleep good at night knowing they are as safe and secure as reasonably possible.

I use PBase for file sharing of selected images and my computer storage is done in Windows Explorer within my own defined directory structure.

My favorite images are stored on my photo web site. The entire collection existsd on my CD drive, and then again on a back-up drive which has mirror images of my documents and pictures directories. Worse comes to worse, Dad has many of my pictures on his PC too :)

I just bit the bullet after using many free sites, and signed on for a standard smug mug account. I also back up to dvd and external HD.
Not paranoid or anything. :confused3

I have 2 external hard drives and 2 internal hard drives. I use 1 of the internal (the secondary one) hard drives as the main photo storage area. I have a My Photos file. On the main internal hard drive I have the best images copied to the Public Photos in the Public folder. This is also used as the screen saver.

Once a month I copy the newest folders to the 2 external hard drives. Also about once a month I copy the RAW files and JPEG files to a DVD. Once the images are copied to DVD (or on at least 3 different HD's) I will delete the original images off the media card.

I too use smugmug, though its main purpose is to share photos. It also provides an additional backup for the best of the pics.

Do you mean it provides back up because it is stored at their site???

I assume this is a site you have to pay for? What is the cost???

Thanks!

Dawn

Yep, its stored on their servers. Full resolution image. For a 1 year subscription it is $39.95 for a standard account which does include unlimited uploads for images under 12MB in size.

Flickr is free, but you can only view 200 images at a time and its a 5MB size limit. Their standard membership IIRC is $25. Unlimited uploads for images under 10MB. I like the layout and set up of smugmug better. I used flickr for about 18 months.

You can save $5 off a smugmug membership using this code: eeWMM89aMx1lc

Thank you! I will look into both of those.

Is it any wonder your name is all digits, heheheheheee

I have a small 60GB external hard drive and back up to Webshots. I have the membership with them that is $20 a year.

i have a drive dedicated to photo storage, and an additional drive dedicated to photo backup. i backup the photos either once a week or whenever i am importing anything significant. the backup is using the Apple Aperture vault (which stores the raw files and associated metadata) and is copied to two separate drives. One drive is stored remotely. i admit that i've been really slack lately storing my slides and negatives. they normally go into folders, but lately they just go into plastic ziplock bags and into a box.

i also upload photos to Flickr, however this is for sharing, not for archival purposes.

Does anyone use Snapfire?

I just realized I have a lot of photos on there from the free trial. All I have done is download them though. I haven't gone through what it can do beyond that.....

Is Snapfire not as good? Just curious as noone has mentioned it.

I have several pictures taped to my monitor. Maybe I should go to Kinkos and get them photocopied so I have a backup plan.

I have 1 external HD and 2 internal HDs. I store all my photos an music to the external drive and back them up to data DVD every couple months. My smugmug account also acts as a bit of a backup as well.

A USB external drive is inexpensive and very simple to hook up. It's a very quick and easy way to backup files, especially those irreplaceable photos.

Dawn, I've used snapfish mostly to share family photos and get some prints made when I got a free offer. I was pleasantly surprised. The only thing you have to do is make a purchase every year to keep things uploaded to the site in your online albums. I think it is more geared to those who are wanting to print photos, and make collages , calendars etc.

I am not sure what the limit is on uploads, I've never had an issue though. I
switched to smug mug to archive photos , so it is a trial for me.
Snapfish is free, so you won't loose anything using it. I found the prints were very good, you can choose borders too. Very easy to use.
Nancy:thumbsup2
