that actually ship when promised? I have ordered twice now - the order says its supposed to ship in 1-2 business days - so I place the order & then find out that it won't be shipped for a week (or longer) - putting delivery 2 - 3weeks later. My latest order I placed was supposed to even be shipped from a neighboring state - I could walk there & get it faster! :rolleyes1

half.com

barnesandnoble.com

I have had great luck with both of them!

DS got about 1/2 of his books from Amazon, all shipped as promised except one book that was on backorder-nothing they can do about that. The rest he got through the school bookstore because they were custom books and that was the only place they were available. All shipped as promised, except one that was on backorder-that shipped about 2 weeks later-but was there to pick up before school started.

half.com for used, Amazon.com for new. You can pay extra for faster shipping, but this is the few weeks of the year that most people order textbooks, so shipping will take longer.

amazon.com is offering a free amazon prime account for students. With amazon prime you get free 2 day shipping and pay $3.99 per item for one day shipping.

IT is the only thing I use. I love Amazon Prime.

Same here. I buy (and sell) all of my books used on Amazon. I've never had any problems with shipping or condition of the books - most sellers are pretty honest. :thumbsup2

I highly recommend chegg.com, where you can rent books instead of spending a small fortune on them. I got my history text for $25 (price new = $125, used $85). Shipped pretty fast, too. When the semester is over, I send it back. AND they plant a tree for every book you rent. Love it!

I did this as well. Great service and quick shipping with the Prime rate. I also use textbooks.com. I have gotten great service with them the last couple of years.

Some professors do not want students to rent books because they want the student to actively participate in the reading by marking up the text. Also make sure if you rent it is the right edition. Some texts include major changes between editions.

Wow, really? I can't understand why a professor would care if I mark up my book or not. Whether I know the material is what matters.

I use half.com and textbooks.com. I have never had any problem with the books shipping late.

I've ordered books from my daughters from several places including Amazon, Half.com, Valore, Abe,... I use a search engine where you enter the ISBN# and it will pull up where it's being sold and for what price.

I also check the rating of the seller to see if there have been any problems.

I sell their books on Amazon when they are done. I have 100% satisfaction rating and in my listing I say that I will ship the book the same day if the order is placed before 1:00pm CST. Maybe that's why books sell even if they are not the lowest priced one for the condition. I also have a tracking# that I give to the buyer via email so that they can track their order.

I would recommend amazon.com, placed 100+ orders in the last year and only had one miss a date by one day. As a lot of the other posters noted, amazon prime makes shipping free for 2 days and only 3.99 for one day. Costs $79/year, but is free first year for college students. However, if you have a family membership, you can add on up to 5 other people for free.

One issue with renting books from chegg.com is if the book has an access code or comes with CD's they don't guaranty that you'll get them. Since all three of DD's major classes the books came with either CD's and/or access codes we ended up buying new.

OP, we ordered her books from Amazon and they came right on time. Like a PP there was one book that was back-ordered, but that ended up coming a week later.

You didn't say where you ordered from?

I rented from chegg.com and valore.com, and 1 book I ordered late, so ordered with 2 day delivery. Got it right on time. Others said 10 business days, got it in 5 days. This was for the free standard shipping.

As other posters mentioned, you do have to watch what you order, it is important to have the ISBN for the book you want.

I was not comfortable with some of the other places I had not heard of. Some were cheaper but I was worried about having an experience like you did.

I just ordered two texts today for DS from textbooksrus.com, hopefully their shipping is quick. I was hesitant about ordering off of half.com because you are dependent on the individual seller.

This is his first semester, and if he knows a little earlier next semester what he wants, I think I can get him/us better deals.

I always ordered mine from Half.com and never had any problems!

I also sold my books on Half.com and usually sold them within a week or two of listing them!

If you are able to answer any of these questions, that would be wonderful. Thank You!!

Are you allowed to highlight the books? Do they need to be returned in the same condition? For one class I need the textbook and then the study guide. They are both available from this site for a wonderful wonderful price, but of course I will be writing in at least the study guide. Can you not rent it then?

thanks again!

I get mine from my school's bookstore or a bookstore that's right next to the campus. And I always buy used if it is available.

I did half.com this year for one and ebay for another. Both got here fine.
Except DS' teacher told them the wrong edition on 2 of the books grrr. Oh well. The teacher had to make concessions for them because it was his mistake.
