Where do you change diaper on airplane

Hi, I have a question for those who have flown with toddlers- where do change their diaper? Do you use the bathroom (if memory serves me right - the bathrooms are teeny tiny).

well one time I did it in the bathroom. she stood on the toilet and I changed her standing up. the second time I did it on the seat. we had the whole row. much easier that way. the bathrooms are teeny tiny.

I of course try to avoid it at all costs if I can. I usually change diapers before I board, so they'll be relatively dry until we get there. Now if an emergency every arose, there is a changing table in the bathrooms if memory serves me correctly, but I'd probably just change him in his car seat.

Newer aircraft will sometimes have a changing table in the lavatory that folds down over the toilet. I know US Airways' Airbus aircraft have this feature.

SWA does NOT have a changing table. I had a huge "run-in" with a flight attendant about this and got several letters of apology. I won't go into details. But, officially this is what they told me. In the back of the plane there is a small space where there are jump seats for the flight attendants. They told me, before the flight began, to talk to one of the attendants and ask, if need be, if you could use a blanket and change a diaper on the floor in front of the jump seats. (keep in mind that is what I did to begin with...but that is probably why I got all the apologies) Most of them are very nice about it.

There is NOT enough room in the bathroom for you to change a diaper unless they are standing or VERY small. I'm glad to hear that some airlines are adding a small changing table. Hooray for them.

I have also changed my son on the seat. Of course, putting down one of our blankets and then changing him. This works well when you have three seats together. Sometimes works with two seats but is much more difficult.

The best suggestion I can give is talk to the flight attendant who is in your seating area. Ask her for suggestions and then go from there. We are "potty trained" now -- HOORAY-- but still use pull ups on airplanes since we can't always go to the bathroom when the seatbelt sign is on. Good luck.

I would try to change the diaper as close to boarding as possible, then perhaps you could get away without having to change it on the plane. Our flights are short enough that a wet diaper I would just wait until we landed to change. On the longer leg of our last flight DD (then 15mo old) had a major major need for a change. Without going into great detail, it was too messy to do in the seats, so we just took her to the back of the plane, laid her on a blanket I had brought along with changing pad on top. DH was by her head, myself by her feet, so as to bother as little people as possible (including flight attendant who had just sat down to eat) We ended up using 2 ziploc bags, one for the diaper/wipes and another for her clothing she had on at the time. There is no way this one would have waited, be sure to bring ziploc bags!!! It may annoy some people for you to do it this way, but as few as possible. Much less than a cranky dirty diapered baby would anyway.

and if you do change the diaper in the seats please do not put the soiled diaper int he seatback pocket. Utilty gets so many of these. and its disgusting and unsanitary.

Second best places to change diapers:

1. On the closed lav. toilet seat, with your own body halfway out the lav. door.

2. On a blanket on the floor just inside the airplane door, plenty of space there.

Don't change baby in the seats, too much chance for getting filth on the fabric.

Please respect those around you and DON'T change the diaper on the seat, unless you:

a. have the row to yourself, and

b. put down a blanket or towel over the seat.

Also, please pack ziplock bags for soiled items, including diapers and clothing.

I love reading these boards. I've been traveling, primarily alone, with my son since he was three months. I've always brought LOTS of ziploc bags, gallon and quart size -- the freezer weight -- as well as tons of wipes, blankets, toys, etc. I would have never dreamed of placing a soiled diaper in the seat back! I even bring my own ziploc bags for trash -- for some reason kids seem to generate more of it on planes. The flight attendants have ALWAYS thanked me for doing that and I never stopped to think about why. Sometimes it has to hit me like a brick...I just assumed that others did the same thing.

And I would never dream of changing my child on anything that I didn't own. Never know what might have been on it. Or, of doing it with someone else sitting beside me. One time there was an older lady in the seat beside me and I was trying to get up to change him...she said I've seen so many diapers, please go ahead and do it here. She was so nice about it. That is the only time I've done it when someone else was beside me and it worked okay but I can see the point.

I think it gets down to be courteous of those around you. And, now I know there are those who are not and it is more common than I would have thought.

Many of the newer planes do have a small diaper changing table that comes down above the toilet.

I know when I had little ones in diapers, in my diaper bag there was the little mat to put the child on. I always used that, cuz goodness knows what are on those airline blankets- in fact someone could have changed a diaper on it before you - YUCK!!!!!

Please, please, please, put the dirty diaper in a ziplock or motion sickness bag, and then dispose of it in the bathroom yourself. Please do not expect a flight attendant to dispose of your child's dirty poopy diaper!! It amazes me that people would do that- what a health risk!

If you do need to change the diaper on the floor, ask the flight attendant first. Many times the only area that is open is near the galley, and that is not the best place to change- dirty diaper in the kitchen- mmmmm!

One more thought- remember to bring you wipes and diapers- most airlines do not have these on board. They might be on board some international flights, but don't depend on it!!

When DD was in daipers we were lucky enough to get the bulkhead, so we had plenty of room on the floor in front of us

My one poopy diaper change on an airplane was pretty difficult. I wound up laying her (big toddler) on the diaper bag mat in the back of the plane where the flight attendants jumper seats were and also some bathrooms if I remember correctly. I think the upper part of her body was on the carpeted aisle. There just wasn't anywhere for us to go and it couldn't wait, believe me!! I still haven't gotten the hang of the standing diaper change and didn't want to chance a repeat episode with a badly fastened diaper...it would have been much worse!! You do what ya gotta do!!
