Where do "two people eat like one" at Disney

There is no way that my husband or the boys (all men over 6' tall) would be able to (or willing to) split any meal with someone. But my daughter and I have split meals several times. (The Shawarma platters at the Moroccan pavillion in Epcot is really huge.) More often than not, she will order a platter and I will order just a burger (or whatever) and we split the sidedish she got.

I'm glad I'm not the only one wondering this! When we went to Disney we had it in our head that these portions were going to be big enough for us to split. That didn't work. We had to order our own meals! At Prime Time Cafe, we ate out own pot roast platter and fried chicken platter. At Sci Fi we each had an appetizer, milkshake, burger and fries. And we ate it all:lmao:
:

this was us!!

thanks for the suggestions everyone. We tried the 1/2 chicken platter at cosmic rays. I order 2 for the 4 of us and the boys ended up going back and ordering a 3rd one. :rotfl:

I may have to accept the reality that my family is not the "sharing" type. LOL.

Maggie, I will check out those pictures.

This doesn't work for everyone. DH eats a lot if we are home I have to make recipe for four 3 portions for DH one for me. We had the regular dinning plan when we got to Disney and most of time that wasn't enough. Thankfully I eat little so he end up eating half of my portion too, plus the desert. I know we will never try to split a meal at WDW he will be starving.

Splitting doesn't work for us either so I can sympathize. DS and DH both have hearty appetites and I usually order some kind of salad which no one else wants. I help keep the quantity of food down for myself by sometimes only having dessert for dinner. This works out best when we eat CS though.

I always hear and read about these supersized plates at Disney restaurants that can be shared but so far I haven't run across them, so let me ask a few questions.

Full Disclosure time: I have 2 teenage sons both over 6ft 2. and a big dh.

1) People who split, are both people satisfied? We tried the "split a burger" suggestion that seems to be popular. went to Pecos bill, asked for an extra bun and we made 2 little burgers. Sorry, I was still hungry.

2) do you find you snack between. Once again dh and I tried splitting a salad at the MK and it was fine for about 1 hour, shortly after, we were looking for the kios that sold those "turkey legs"

Where are these restaurants that supposed to give enough to feed 2? :confused3

We've never found them.

With 2 big boys and a big DH, I think you will be hard pressed to find a meal to share that will fill them unless they are not really hungry. Salad is definately not the way to go.. I had one myself for lunch and I was hungry after an hour or 2. With all the walking you really need some serious protein to keep you full.

We have 3 girls (and a toddler boy) and can barely manage to make the "food share" idea work.

I have boys too and I have to tell you, our opportunities to split meals are far fewer than they were.

What we have done though is to have a late lunch, around 2:30 or so, and then leave the parks for a late dinner at the condo.

My older boys can easily eat the chicken meal at Cosmic Ray's. The WHOLE thing.

Now, I sometimes split with the 7 year old, but he often still wants a granola bar or snack pretty soon after.

I have noticed the meals getting smaller too. I remember there was a great place outside of Thunder Mountain RR at Disneyland where you could get a huge plate (more like a platter) with 1/2 chicken, a very large corn muffin, large portion of slaw and baked beans, for around $8. When the two older boys were young, I used to take them to DL by myself and we would all 3 split that meal and still have some left over sometimes.

Same with our girls -- their appetites are HUGE. They're 14, 12 and 9 and very active. We're a family of 6 and we usually order at least 4 CS entrees, usually 5, but we're not big snackers either.

i find this one to be big, a taco salad from Peco's, the breakfast platters at the resorts (with the eggs, bacon, and pancakes), and a few of the meals at Seasons leave me feeling a bit stuffed and more than I want to eat while walking around.

Not necessarily that the sweets aren't big enough, but it helps portion size it back to a decent amount, rather than over indulging. Some people say it's vacation, and out the window to all the eating habits you have at home. Other's find ways to resist the temptation of eating too much by sharing.

For me, I can be satisfied with a kids meal at some places, and the person I shared with was the same way. We'd either get our own kids meal or share a regular meal. It wasn't all that often we ordered a full entree each.

I don't eat it just because I am on vacation. I would do the same thing at home....if I wanted a cinnamon bun, I want my own! lol. And I am all well aware of portion control. I had lost 100lbs before I went to Disney

I think my favorite meals were the character buffett meals. The CS breakfasts were way to small for us!

DD, 20, and I always have our DOH moment at the first CS meal of the trip when we each order our own meal because we've forgotten to share. If we don't share, we most always end up throwing half of each of our meals away. The only place we really don't share is at Columbia Harbour House because I like the clam chowder and she's not a fan.

For TS meals, I have to agree with the earlier poster about the chicken dinner at Prime Time. I've never eaten more than just part of the breast and then the rest of the meal. DD's boyfriend was with us on the last trip. He's in the Air Force, tall and thin, and wolfed down his pot roast/meat loaf combo and then obligingly ate 3/4's of my chicken for me. It's the first time I've ever gotten a clean plate sticker! :lmao: So, I can see how sharing wouldn't work with those teenage boys but even DH and I share meals occasionally at WDW without a problem.

Rather than order 2 meals for 4 people, I would recommend you order 3... still splitting but you probably will be satisfied and not have leftovers.

We eat mostly CS now that we go so often. I agree that sharing is more doable at TS restaurants when ordering apps and dessert also. My family consists of mainly small girls/women and we do not "count on sharing". I think that is bad advice for first timers. We eat small breakfasts ( ie. toast with peanutbutter or a granola bar), and are usually starving for an early lunch. We "may" share 2 CS credits (because it comes with dessert) for 3 of us, but that's not a given.

We've never found them.

Same with our girls -- their appetites are HUGE. They're 14, 12 and 9 and very active. We're a family of 6 and we usually order at least 4 CS entrees, usually 5, but we're not big snackers either.

Same here. It's usually just dd14 and me, and we could never share a meal. (Nor could we agree on one to share. :lmao:) Maybe if we bought some extras. But really fast metabolisms run in our family. My dd can eat as much, or more, than a 6 foot teen boy. But she doesn't snack. She eats the huge meals 2x a day, and she's good. And event though my metabolism slowed as I aged, I can still put down quite a bit more than the average person and stay at the same weight.

So, we're in the same boat. Not much on sharing a meal. Maybe we'd do it more if we snacked, but we don't tend to do that.

I have never had a meal at Disney I wanted to share and I am not a big person. I'm not sure why people say this. I could see sharing a dessert and appetizer, but that's it.

Not so much in the parks, that we found. However, at POR DH, DD and I split the create your own pasta and create your own sald between the three of us and still have leftovers. That is a HUGE portion!

I have shared meals with my fiance, especially counter service. I feel like all the meals are pretty big and by the end of the trip on the dining plan, I'm so full I can't eat a meal by myself. But maybe I'm just a little eater.

I don't think that people who say they split meals would suggest this for people with teenage boys or a big DH??? We split meals at Disney (and when we go out at home) almost every meal. However I am a light eater and have 2 teen GIRLS who are light eaters. I would also say that my DH is a light eater for a guy. He routinely gets entree salads as his meal. But I rarely share with him.

Also, I don't think its fair to split a salad and then question where all the places are at Disney where you can share. I have never once read on a sharing thread about people splitting a salad?? :confused3 People suggest splitting the ribs/chicken meal at Cosmic Rays and things like that.

On the "buy an extra bun and split a double cheeseburger" situation, I would say in most instances people who suggest that were talking about little kids, not teen boys.

Here are a few of the meals that we have shared:
Steak and shrimp meal at Yak and Yeti
Chicken meal at Whispering Canyon Cafe (this is NOT the all you can eat skillet)
Steak and shrimp and rib meal at Rainforest Cafe
Chicken and rib meal at Cosmic Rays
Chicken parmesan meal at Mama Melrose
Nachos at ESPN Zone
Steak sandwich at Beaches and Cream so we could have a little room for one of the sundaes

Your family might not be one that can use this savings technique due to the makeup of the family. Just like my family can't take advantage of any savings the Dining Plan would offer. Not everyone can use all the "tips".

If I had teen boys and a big DH, I would definitely get the dining plan and eat our TS meals at buffets. I think that would be your best bet.

Maggie

I agree. No tip works for everyone. :confused3 It's pretty simple - if you have big appetites don't share meals. If you have small appetites - share meals. I have two teenaged boys and love to same money, but it never even occured to me to suggest to them to share a meal! We did do it when they were younger though.

I can't see any way to share with two strapping teenage boys.
We did some meal sharing on both trips, but our kids were younger/smaller than that.

On our first trip our kids were 5 & 7. We had the dining plan and managed to break the counter service into a breakfast and lunch each day by sharing meals. Worked out great. Two small meals, a snack, and one sit down meal each day was more than enough food for us.

On our second trip, the kids were 10 & 12. We skipped the meal plan. Our first couple counter service meals we each ordered our own meal and had a lot of leftover food. But there was no way two meals was going to be enough for all of us. We settled on ordering three meals and sharing between the four of us. That was just about perfect.

I always hear and read about these supersized plates at Disney restaurants that can be shared but so far I haven't run across them, so let me ask a few questions.

Full Disclosure time: I have 2 teenage sons both over 6ft 2. and a big dh

I think the 'split a meal' suggestion largely applies to somewhat younger children and/or smaller eaters. I doubt you'll find many teenaged males for whom it works. You say you have a big DH, so I'd say that counts him out as well.

I don't personally buy into the thinking that all the meals are super sized by any means. Bigger meals than I'd likely eat at home, sure. Bigger than what I'd eat any other time I went out to a restaurant? Not so much. Even more so when I'm walking around and on my feet all day, it's not hard to pack down a large meal :)

My mom and I split quite a few counter service meals when were there recently, but neither one of us are big eaters. Some of the meals we split were:

Epcot WS - England - Fish & Chips
AK - Yak & Yeti - Honey Chicken & Rice
Food Court - Omlette and homefries
Food Court - Personal pizza
Cosmic Rays - Chicken dinner
Any wrap sandwich that comes with fries

We find we split the meal, drink & dessert and its plenty for both of us. The only things we tend to eat ourselves are salads.

Splitting only works for DS16 and I - he gets an entire meal and half of mine!
DD15 and DH need their own meals. I could eat an entire meal but don't need to.

I found the portions at pretty much all of the Counter Service places to be large enough to share. We were on the standard dining plan, and they routinely gave me more food than I would have ordered on my own. TS restaurants were more of a mixed bag, with some providing enormous portions (Tutto Italian springs to mind), and others being more "normal."
