Another discussion board I'm on, DisneyDollarless, does a variation of this. That site is dedicated to finding ways to save money on everything Disney, especially trips, but also has lots of ways to add a little magic to your trip.
Members there can request that other members who are going to the park send postcards to their children from the parks with messages from their favorite characters. So although your child couldn't write to Mickey, he *could* receive a postcard from Mickey (or his favorite other character) that says "Heard you're coming to see me! Can't wait to see you in February! Love, Mickey" or whatever you want it to say.
Our whole family (20 people) is going in December, so I'm requesting someone going in November to send postcards to all the kids in my group. It'll be a surprise for them, and obviously not from me (the family planner and Disney fan) since it will be postmarked at WDW not in Virginia!
