Where do I evacuate TO??

I know when/if the hurricane hits our area, we won't have electricity. So, I want to find a room because, I need/want electricity to take care of the babies not to mention safety. I'm trying to book a room online through Expedia and there aren't any available for a week. Only a day here or there. I've tried to look for a room in Lufkin, Nacogdoches, Texarkana, Shreveport. I've gone through every emotion tonight looking for gas, lumber, and water.

Try to get hotel phone numbers and call them directly. Just b/c inventory isn't available on-line, doesn't mean it isn't at all available.

Also, try an unconvetional route...look at a map and see if you can take a different/unlikely route.

Not familiar with the geography, so cannot help you otherwise.

If you have AAA--you can pick an arbitrary destination (like Orlando or Kansas City or something)....and then on the internet you can do a trip tik--and then zoom in all along the route and find hotels.

I work for hotels.com and we only have 4 hotels left in Dallas...everything else is sold out. Good luck.

ETA...of course we don't carry every hotel and don't have access to every room. I was just shocked how fast everything went. I would suggest calling 800 numbers to individual hotel chains

Its going to be hard finding one there too. Its another city we are being evacutated to.

Maybe you will have more luck trying the smaller cities. Ones on the way to Dallas are Centerville, Buffalo, Madisonville, Fairfield.

Smaller cities on the way to San Antonio will be Wallis, Beeville, Sealy.

if all else fails our katrina shelter is till open, and will take more in. try monroe, la, and or s e ark. our area is still fairly open, and not but 3 hours from shreveport, and about 8 hours from houston

wherever you can find it. but if you're in the cone and inside the evac zone...go. the gulf water temps are in the high 80's and this one is moving slowly. it's going to be a big one. we got the bands as it passed the Keys today.

Sleepyone, are you really that worried, being in Humble? I am in West Houston, near Katy, and have not started worrying about it yet...maybe I should be? I guess we will decide tomorrow morning what to do, when they know more about where it is going to hit. But looking at the maps on the local news, neither you nor I would be anywhere near the Storm Surge...are you worrying about flooding and the winds?? I am not saying in any way that you should not be worried, not at all, just that maybe I should be more worried! Have you checked any of the small towns outside of the Dallas/FW metro area?? Maybe they are not as booked. Or in East Texas around Tyler, etc.

Hotel rooms in San Antonio will be hard to find, they've been putting Katrina evacuees into them with vouchers. I suspect the same is true for many cities in Texas. I doubt you'd find anything here in Seguin, maybe New Braunfels...they have more hotels than we do.

I've heard that evacuation centers in San Antonio, though some still house Katrina evacuees, have room now for quite a few Rita evacuees. Not my first choice, but anywhere would be better than being caught in the hurricane.

Is Austin booked up, too? San Marcos? You might have to drive further but surely there are rooms available a little further west? Or perhaps Center or Marshall?

My SIL and MIL live right at I-10 and Beltway 8. Their only concern is if they lose power. My MIL is ill and cannot tolerate the heat and humidity. They will evacuate to one of our houses near Hemphill, if necessary.

I have an extra bedroom & bath that I had offered to Katrina victims, but it's still empty. If there are any DIS'ers that need somewhere to evacuate to let me know. I'm happy to help if it's possible. (hopefully we'll be spared another big hit)

Our home has VERY large windows...we live in a glass house so to speak. So, I'm worried about the winds mostly. As far as flooding, I have a friend and a relative in Katy who are both worried about flooding.

I am just getting mixed messages from everyone. I know flooding could be a definate problem with all of the bayous. But watching Channel 2 now, with the Houston Emergency Director, he is saying that unless you are in the level 1, 2, or 3 zones you do not need to evacuate. Hope you and you family find a place to go to and stay safe! Luckily, my family lives in Dallas, so besides having to deal with my mother I will be okay!

We lived in Humble in 1983 when Hurricane Alicia came through Houston. It was a Category 3. We had a tree fall on our house, but we only were without power for about 1 day. In Bellaire, my brother was without power for about 1 week. I'd bet that Humble (we actually lived in Atascocita) will be okay. Before Alicia, we had lots of rain for days before so the ground was saturated. Then the trees just fell over because they didn't have anything to hold on to. As long as you haven't had that problem (and not many bark beetles causing trees to die) I bet you will still be okay. Barricade your windows to keep them from breaking all over your house - maybe tarp or plywood if you can find any. Broken glass was the biggest problem with Alicia.

Our Katrina shelter at the Hirsch Colliseum in Shreveport is still open, the only one right now. Shreveport is only 4 hours from Humble. If Houston starts evacuating, I bet they will reopen the LSUS shelter on the SE side of Shreveport. They just closed LSUS last Friday and moved the Katrina people over to Hirsch.

We have family in Humble, too, (and Cypress) and haven't heard anything from any of them yet.
