Where do exessive fees end..

I have AAA. It serves us well when we really need it. Part of the membership is the DMV service. I go in today to get my car tags. Come to find out that they are now charging a 4 dollar fee per transaction. Now I know 4 dollars doesnt seem like alot, but they only accept cash. I had just enough cash to pay my car tags. and had to go get 4 dollars cash. I asked who the money goes to. She said AAA. She said it was either people pay for it or the service goes away. So much for that being apart of the membership fee. So sad business's want to keep charging us more and more.

I ran into the same issue when I was going to renew my license at the County Clerk's Office. They said the fee covered the computer cost. I just made the trip to the DMV instead. I could have paid the $4, but resented the fee.

Mine either for that matter DMV doesn't even know I have AAA. I know Ohio charges an extra small amount for mailing tags, but this is on renewal form.

They posted a notice started a few days back here in ca. They let you buy the car tags which saves time from the mailing or going into DMV. They only accept cash or check. No ATM cards. I hope for everyone else it is not implemented. I am so tired of handing over so many fees that are suppose to be included in the service.

I don't know. I figure it's a convenience fee. You don't have to go the DMV and wait in those lines.

Something I learned when moving from CA is that the AAA there is completely different from the AAA elsewhere. AAAs are different all over. I know that AAA here does NOT even have that service!

(renewing tabs (what it's called here) here is so easy though...do it online, go into the office, use the little machine to tell it that you paid online and you're here now, not even 5 minutes later you're called up (ahead of the people who didn't pay online) and handed your tabs. so so easy.)

Can't you just order your new license sticker online? That's what I do. No way am I going to stand in line for that. There is a $1.95 service fee to pay with a credit card, but to me that's worth it vs standing in line. I don't think I'd use the AAA service because I'd have to drive over there AND pay the fee.

Check out your local DMV's website. You can probably pay online for less than a$4.00 fee.

In CT, you can renew your driver's license, or your non-driver's ID card, at the AAA offices. They will take cash, money orders, personal checks, or bank checks made out to DMV. The AAA office has the option of collecting a $2.00 convenience fee, payable to AAA. The lines are typically much better there - I'll pay the fee.

I didn't know you could do anything at AAA related to state/county business.

But I did know you can use your AAA card to get 10% off at Payless.

Were you just renewing? Was there a smog check involved? If no smog is required, you can just renew online on the CA DMV website next time. You can pay with a credit card or online check, and there are no extra fees, not even for using a credit card. The website address is on your renewal notice - just make sure to save the notice, you need some information from it to be able to do the online renewal. I've done it this way for several years now.

(If smog is involved I think you just have to wait for the smog place to transmit the data to the DMV - that usually happens within a day or two - then you can still renew online. But it's been awhile since I had to smog and I could be remembering wrong on that one, you may have to mail that in.)

No reason to pay extra fees if your tax dollars have already created a system you can use for free!!!!

I'm not sure what you are referring to. I lived in Northern California for decades (San Mateo County) and had AAA. I don't remember the two having anything to do with each other.

In CA, there are many places where you can do certain DMV transactions such as recording private party sales, renewing your tags, etc. Check cashing places, payday loan places, etc. often do it. AAA also does it. It's not a service many people use, most of us just suck it up and go down to the DMV or do them by mail/online via the DMV website, but these places do exist - just keep your eyes open, and you'll start noticing them.

Thanks for the different replys, I had to do my smog but it gets sent to Dmv right away. I went in after the smog and thats when I found out about the fee. Its just maddening paying for fee after fee for things. I think I will find a different way to pay so I dont pay the fees.

At least the card still gets discounts. I will just figure someother way to pay the car tags. Its interesting hearing from all of you and the way things are handled where you are.

Under certain circumstances here, you can't renew on line. I think it's after so long you have to appear in person.
