Hi all

Am trying to buy shares but the Irish banks are a bit tedious and it seems there should be an easier way...
So where did you buy online shares is my question!?
Do I need to be a resident of UK?
Has anyone used Sharewatch? aka ODL I think.
I have very little knowledge of share buying/shares in general (ok no knowledge at all :rolleyes1)
Would greatly welcome any advice!!!
Thanks
Kiz

Just to update I think Ive gotten it sorted.
Ive set up a transfer of funds from my bank account to the fund account I'll be buying with shares through (Sharewatch - ODL). Just have to wait for some things in relation to my online account being finalised.

It might be worth meantioning that shortly AIB (Ireland) will not be offering share trading by the sounds of things.

I think Ive found the most straight forward way of doing it but theres nothing straight forward about buying EuroDisney shares in Ireland by the looks of things!

Not sure if I'm any help- but my Eurodisney shares are the only ones I own (21- had to get 1 more just for the sake of it!)

I set up a share account with my own bank (Natwest) which I transferred money into. Then when they had taken some for the privelidge (£20 i think) I bought my shares online,

It was almost too easy, and I was left with the feeling that 'that can't be it!'

The next day (I did it around 11pm at night) I had an email to say my transaction had gone through, so I logged back into my share account, printed off the paper saying I was the proud owner of 21 shares and posted it off.

My card arrived 4 weeks later, as I posted it.

I would do it by email/ fax if I were you then you have a copy of your numbers etc just in case.

I was worried mine was lost in the post
(but it wasn't- obviously!)

Good luck :surfweb:

Hope you get it sorted. I tried to do it a few years ago but I couldn't get my funds to transfer in to start with. I'm Bank of Ireland (sterling account), but they didn't accept them. Might try again if you get it to work.

Karen if you have a look at sharewatch.ie. You can sign up for an account with them through ODL.
I can walk you through it when your applying for an account if you want.
You need a scan of a driving license, two utility bills and to print, sign and scan a form they send you. Its very easy, I was a bit cautious initially but Ive emailed the enquires dept. and they were very helpful and didnt make me feel dumb for not knowing the ins and outs of share buying.
I think they only charge €14.95 per transaction as opposed to AIBs €36 per transaction PLUS another €26 yearly charge. This is thru Goodbodys.

Im just waiting for the fund transferring side of my online bank to be set up - why this isnt automatically done when you add online banking to your account baffles me but should have shares bought by Tuesday or Wednesday!

This is technically how it should be in Ireland but alas the bigger banks (BOI and AIB) just set you up with another company through the ban who solely deal in shares, charge you handsomely for the priviledge and now both banks are getting out of it.
It wasnt a very direct route of buying the shares, was so much more expensive and theres were so many messy ends to tie up before you'd even manage to buy shares (like having to request a card reader which reads you ATM/Debit card and then calculates a PIN number to alow you to transfer funds - ridiculous!!)

Its a pity it couldnt be as straight forward and logging on to your online account and buying shares. Irish banks could stand to learn alot from Natwest.

Thanks for the advice :thumbsup2
