I asked crown what protection you would get if they got into difficulties and was told none

Just as I expected, so why on earth do people give them money to keep for months and months? It just is not worth the risk to gain a few extra cents which is probably very similar to you earning interest if you keep the money in your own bank.

Love them or hate them, credit cards do have advantages. I have several but find that for USA the Nationwide is the best. Its rates are better and there are no charges. We do take some cash but this is used more for tips and parking. Three weeks to go.

Crown Currency exchange. You do have to order them at least 15 days in advance but they are a lot better value.

Another vote for the Nationwide credit and debit card, use mine all the time as well. Usually I phone them up before we are going, so they know not to put a block on the account. Official bank rate, saves you loads.
