DS is in High School band. There are only 3 or 4 games left and so far I have seen only ONE majorette in any of the bands. DS's band has none - just the opposing band last week had a lone majorette. Is baton twirling out of style now?

Our school has no majorettes. It's rather sad. The team we played two weeks ago had five and two of them used fire batons. Now that was impressive.

Mom grew up in Indiana and dreamed of being a majorette for Purdue (Golden Girl and Silver Twins), so she can twirl a mean baton. My sister had no interest in the majorettes although she marched in the band (flute). Loved the flaming batons too, but haven't seen them in years (seems like more rifles than batons).

In our area, majorettes are virtually non-existent.

Colorguard, on the other hand, is H-U-G-E!

Around here they were traded in for rifles in the mid 80's. I loved twirling baton when I was little. As a matter of fact I still have my very first baton.:teeth:

I still have my first one too! If I hadn't been a cheerleader, I DEFINITELY would have wanted to be a majorette. My cousin (who was my mom's age) was a majorette in high school and did so well. I found my baton while my mom and I were cleaning out my playhouse summer before last....She wasn't happy I found it because I spent the rest of the afternoon twirling and tossing and not helping. I couldn't help it!

I've noticed that too. Danceline is the big thing, and majorettes are getting fewer and farther between in our neck of the woods. Several schools have "feature twirlers" and those girls can really rock. Colorguard never was very popular in the schools in my area. People used to say at my school that girls who couldn't fit in the dance uniforms or who were religious and their parents wouldn't LET them wear the dance uniforms went out for flags and rifles instead....I always thought that was harsh and mean...

You know...twirling a baton, flag, or rifle is actually MUCH harder than it looks... I used to have bruises on my elbows and broke the foyer light twice before my mother banned twirling in the house. I still have my baton too.. It was a 'starfire" and I remember thinking I couldn't believe my mom spent $35 dollars on it at the time.

Up here in the North East also!! Although I did see the University of Massachusetts Minuteman Marching Band last year and they had both, majorettes and colorguard! Very impressive!
We also have indoor Winterguard...and I know that FLA. has them too...really big down there!

Still have all my batons....all 9 of them! :teeth: At one time, I was a really, really good twirler. Got a few ribbons and trophys to show for the hard work. ::yes::

I just noticed several places in our area have started to offer twirling again, so maybe it will make a comeback!! I was a majorette in HS, but it was also almost 30 years ago!!

I was a majorette my sophomore year of highschool, but quite frankly, we were a LAME bunch! It was embarrassing to be seen with most of these girls.... so I tried out for cheerleading at the end of that year and stuck with that for my junior and senior years. But I do still have my baton and I have a few pictures of myself looking rather HOT in my SHORT dress/uniform and white marching boots!!! (:p )..................P

I still have my first skinny baton from when I was 7. I think I'll pull it out and teach my daughter a few tricks.

My kids want me to light up my old fire baton but I don't it would work now.

I have fond memories of practicing for hours on end in the back yard.

One day I left it by the back steps and my mom stepped on it and broke her arm on the concrete. I just knew I was going to get a spanking for that but she must have broken her spankin' arm.

We had a featured twirler last year but she graduated. So we only have Flag Corp now. It's not as popular to do as when I was in high school. We had two twirlers and one majorette (our featured twirler).

I was the feature twirler at my HS. My mon still has my fire batons in her garage... Maybe I should get them out and try them out again... Nah, I'd probably set myself on fire!!

I was also a majorette in high school some 30+ years ago. The old regular baton is in the back of a closet but my fire one was lost in the shuffle somewhere. Probably a good thing - these days I would probably light my hair on fire! I'd practice on the lawn and my brother stood by in case he needed to use the hose.

I should dig out the old thing and see if my niece wants some lessons. Some of the tricks would be impossible now - it's a longer distance around the waist than it used to be!

Majorettes are still going strong in north Georgia.:D
