Just reading the thread about book suggestions for an 8 year old and saw many books that I really loved when I was that age (especially Little House).

However, my DDs never really got into those books and I just can't understand! I can still read these books and just enjoy them so much even as an adult. My other favorites that they have tried but never got into are
-Secret Garden
-Little Princess
-All of a Kind Family
-"15" and "Sister of the Bride" by Beverly Cleary
-Nancy Drew
-The Saturdays

I can't think of others right now but has this happened to you? My girls love to read but for some reason they prefer more "modern" books and fantasy stories(although we all love Harry Potter!) My oldest really enjoys Gail Carson Levine books (she wrote Ella Enchanted) but even though I have read them they are just not my thing.

I guess because they are my children and books are such a personal thing I can't understand why they don't enjoy books that I absolutely LOVED as a young girl. Has this happened to anyone else and does it bother you?
So funny, I don't know why this bothers me but it does!

I am waiting to reach that point. I still have all my Trixie Belden books which I started reading when I was 8, and the Little House books, and Little Women, plus my DH and I picked up some "3 detectives books" from used book stores that we both loved, hoping that are DD's will enjoy them to. DD7 is a reader, and will soon be ready to try those, so hopefully she will like at least some of them. If not, I know I'll be disappointed, since I want to have that shared interest.

My dd is an avid reader but has never gotten into mysteries that I loved as a child such as Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden. She reads a lot though so I don't worry about it! She loved all the B Cleary "older" books that you mentioned.

Lol - well, my oldest is a boy, so I don't expect him to get into most of my childhood favorites. I was disappointed that he showed no interest whatsoever in Encyclopedia Brown, however. He is still just starting to get into chapter books, though.

I do have higher expectations for my daughter, when she gets older, as far as liking similar books to me. I'm sure a lot of my old favorites will seem very anachronistic, though. And I have to admit, I didn't really read many of my parents' childhood favorites when I was growing up - I preferred to pick my own books. I'm not even sure what their childhood favorite books were, tbh.
