When you walk your dog...

...do you let him/her stop and sniff stuff, or do you make them keep on going?

I let our dog sniff, DH just keeps pulling her along.

Who's right? (We've debated this for years )

I don't have a dog but see people that let their dog stop and sniff then then end up depositing a surprise on my lawn the the owners walk away. Most people that have dogs are rude, let them poop on the lawn of the house they live at.

I let my Beagle sniff away - I figure it's HER walk, let her sniff.

DH on the other hand gets mad if she even slows down. We fight about it all the time!

Responsible dog owners clean up after their dogs. I always have a couple bags on me to clean up after my dog.

Depends on how much time I have. We live in an apartment community so there is plenty for him to sniff. And he is a sniffer. It is hard to take him for a walk because he feels he needs to sniff everything.

When I walk my dog in the morning before going to work, it's like I'm Speedy Gonzales! He does his thing, and we go back inside. Otherwise, I let him sniff whatever he wants, as long as it isn't other dogs' poop I never understand why dogs feel the need to do that!

It depends on why I' m walking him. Sometimes I let him, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I have to be somewhere, like before work, so I can't slow down. Other times I can take all the time in the world with him and let him sniff whatever he wants, for however long he wants. He usually just sniffs the air???????? He can stand there forever and sniff, sniff, sniff the air, especially on a windy day. Maybe because he's a Lab and comes from a line of trackers?

Honestly, I do let them sniff, but it's kept within reason. I know the grass smells *lovely* on occasion and is just too beautiful to walk away from, but after a while enough is enough! And every responsible dog owner cleans up after their pooch. Baggies are a required carry-on item when we take our walks.

I always bring my poop bags when we go, but my dog never deposits anything anywhere but our backyard (she must have shy bladder syndrome or something), but just in case, I'm prepared.

I do drag her along if she starts sniffing other dog's poop though, that's just plain yucky. Unfortunately, she's a big dog, and I nearly break my arm trying to pull her away - and she does not want to leave a good pile of poop - boggles the mind.

Must be a guy thing not letting them sniff. DH is like the Dog Walking Commando - walk, do not sniff, do not pass Go, do not collect $200.

Minimal sniffing here.... we let her sniff BUT it's a walk (for owner and dog) not a SNIFF. My daughter walks with a friend and her dog sometimes and they let the dog lead the walk... go where he wants to..... they're making him the Alpha Dog and they're gonna be sorry! They also give him food when he barks

Our last dog was a male, stopped to sniff every mailbox, lightpole, bush, etc. Our current dog is a female, husky/shepherd mix, and she does NOT stop! Maybe it's the husky in her, but she wants to GO! Won't even stop to do her business, although I always carry a poop bag just in case.

I let him sniff. My SO doesn't take him on walks. He won't potty while he's on his leash, so I don't have to worry about him depositing somewhere else.

I used to let my dog sniff around on her walks, because I was never in a hurry. We would let her go in the backyard if we didn't want to take a walk. Not an option for paople with no yard. The only time I hurried her along was if she wanted to sniff another dog's yard, and the dog was barking. And we ALWAYS carried baggies and toted any "goodies" back home with us.

Snoop-DoggyDog, (our Black Lab), poops in a little wooded area on our property before he goes for a walk. He LOVES to stop and sniff-sniff everything and he loves to chew on tall blades of grass. I let him sniff for a bit then move on. I prefer to walk at a good clip for exercise but Snoop would rather check out the grass, trees, bushes, rocks, etc., etc. My husband doesn't walk the dog, but when my son walks him, he doesn't like to stop and let Snoop sniff. Must be a guy thing.

Just a side note, but it is comical, or embarrassing, however you look at it, when we walk Snoop in the winter. Most of the winter we have huge snowbanks beside the roads and when Snoop has to pee, he stands up against the snowbank with his back to the road, and pees, just like a guy in front of a toilet. A normal dog would just lift his leg, but not our Snoop-Dog. Once a neighbor drove by and slowed down, and rolled down his window and laughed, "Did he learn that from your husband?!"

I let my lab sniff, but I will not allow him to "go" in someone else's yard. I have trained him to go on the street and then I scoop it up. The only time I let him use the grass is a vacant field at the end of my development. What irritates me is that others let their dogs urinate in my yard which then irritates my dog and he has to remark all his territory. I mean, come on, I don't feel that just because I have a yard you have a right to let your dog use it as a toilet. I respect others' property. Just wish they would respect mine. Sorry, can you tell this is PET peevee of mine (no pun intended).
