When you transfer points, how do you handle the transaction between parties?

We've rented points as both the renter and the rentee, and we've transferred points between family members... but we've never transferred points to a stranger before. Do you require payment up front for the entire purchase? How do you assure the purchaser that you will uphold your end of the transfer? I would appreciate some insight into how most of you handle this transaction.

Thanks for your help!

As the person receiving the points 50% before transfer and 50% as soon as they are transfered (by paypal).

Each party has equal risk.

I wondered about that scenario, but then I realized the risk is not equal. With PayPal, if the seller does not deliver the points, the purchaser can protest the transaction with PayPal and get their money back through the PayPal dispute process. If the points are transferred and the other half of the money is not sent, the seller has no recourse via PayPal.

If I were you I would get the whole amount up front. I was a rentee before
and I didn't object to that arrangement. What I did as a rentee was check the renters prior posts, if they seen good I would rent from them. There is always a matter of trust, the way I see it the renter could always be found.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. Because of the PayPal policies, I did end up asking for the entire amount upfront, with no objection from the buyer.

If you read the detials of the paypal protection they actually exclude transaction that do not have a physical deliverable so when the purchaser uses paypay they have no formal protection (simaler to people who rent since the protection for that end 45 day after the pruchase ( which is long before most peoeple's vacation).

Thanks for the heads up. I just looked over the PayPal Protection Plan here:
https://cms.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/?...locale.x=en_US#13. PayPal Purchase Protection.

From what it says on the PayPal policies page under "Ineligible Items," it appears that any transaction for a digital transfer, travel arrangements, real estate or services would be excluded. I'd say that excludes a DVC points rental or transfer from many different angles!

It looks like contracts are the only protection... short of using an agent to hold funds in escrow until the transaction is completed... which would be ridiculously expensive, time-consuming and complicated! Of course, any written correspondence could serve as proof if you had no formal contract and ended up in small claims court, but if you're dealing cross country, that can get really complicated. For such relatively small contracts, it really does just come down to trust.

Payment upfront before the points are transferred. I've done it both as the person buying the points and the person selling the points. Works well for me.

I don't mind making a reservation and waiting for a check to be mailed as long as the reservation is far enough out but I would never transfer points without getting full payment upfront and cleared through the bank.
