do you take them off when you eat or do you just put your dish on top and eat???

we eat in our living room on the coffee table in front of the television. It's a lift-top type table so it lifts up to be a normal height table for eating. We keep place mats on it while eating and put our plates and cups right on the mats.

It's good you use place mats. My DH ruined the finish on a really nice coffee table with his drinking glasses!

We usually eat in the kitchen and I only put out the place mats when we eat. They're cloth, so after we eat I just roll them up and keep them in the middle of the table. We don't even need them, since the table is laminate, but they look nice when we eat.

If its just DH and i, i leave the placemats. If we have company then the placemats come off and i put on a tablecloth.

If they are the type that can be wiped clean, we put the dish on them. If they are cloth, then we remove them to prevent constant washing.

LOL---why would you have placemats down if you were not going to put your dish on them and eat?? They save the table cloth from having to be washed every meal!

Our placemats are for decoration and are right on the wood table. We never use placemats with a table cloth. It is one or the other. We like the look of placemats on the wood table. The placemats are changed for the season or event.

I was wondering the same thing. I don't find any of them overly attractive so I wouldn't use them for decor purposes but, hey, different strokes I guess.

I leave them on when we eat. We use either a table cloth or place mats but never both.

We have place mats on our table in the breakfast nook. WE move them when we eat. We don't use table cloths, I don't care for them at all. My table is tile so it doesn't matter if we set our plates and drinks down on it, it won't ruin.

I don't understand having placemats on the table if you aren't going to use them while eating. They're to protect the table from getting scratched.

I only put them out when we are using them to put plates on them at the breakfast table. I use tablecloths in the dining room. Both tables are bare unless in use.

::yes:: This was my thought as well. (except the scratched part -- I was thinking preventing getting food or water marks on the table).

I have never had a table get scratch by a plate. Our tables finish never gets water marks. What are your table made of?:confused3

We had a bad ring on our dining table from a glass left on it. DH put mayo on it and left it for several hours, then wiped it off. After doing this several days in a row, the ring is gone!!!

That's how I feel. :) I don't even think that placemats serve any purpose, but if you have them b/c they are pretty, don't make the table less pretty by taking them off!
