Do you tip the person who washes your hair? I always do. I thought most people did, even if it is just a $1. But I have notice lately, that there are many people who do not. So what do you think, tip or no tip?

As a former shampoo girl...please tip! Even if it's only 50 cents. ( I used to get quarter tips way back when!)

I tip my shampoo person!

My hairdresser shampoos me herself so yes I tip.

Many years ago, I used to be a hairstylist. Please tip your shampoo person. They are usually working for peanuts. I started out shampooing while I was training to get my license and I can tell you, if it wasn't for the tips, I would have had to quit.

Waiters work the same way, their salary is practically nothing. Their bread and butter is their tips.

My hairdresser shampoos me. Every now and then she'll be trying to jugle two clients at once and another hairdresser will shampoo me. When this happens (maybe once every 6-7 visits), I don't tip the second hairdresser, because I know it's a "favor" and my hairdresser helps her out in the same situation. The salon I go to doesn't have "shampoo girls" otherwise I would tip them.

I used to tip five dollars to the shampoo person. They always gave a scalp massage while they shampooed my hair! At my current salon, the hairdresser who cuts my hair does the shampoo also, so she gets one tip at the end. :flower:

I go to one of those chain salons (Holiday) and my hairdresser is the one who shampoos me. Someone else mentioned another stylist washing as a favor, and that's the way it is there -- so, no I don't tip the other stylist. But when I did go to a salon that had a shampoo person, yes, I tipped them a dollar.

I do, but I don't do it when she first shampoos my hair, but when I'm paying and tipping the stylist. So if someone saw me, they might think that I didn't tip. I usually tip $1 unless I'm getting a perm, etc and the shampoo person does more work.

My stylist is the owner and the only employee, LOL, so yes, I tip her.

I've read before that you don't need to tip the owner - has anyone heard this before and do you tip the owner (if she's your stylist)?

DH and I both go to a husband and wife team. We always tip them both. He alwasy washes and cuts our hair. the wife will wax my eyebrows! We also take them a gift during the Holidays! :goodvibes

I think it is nice to tip the shampoo person because like Nancy said, they work for very little money.

I used to do a lot of shampooing when I got started in the business and building my clientele. I was a co-worker so I didn't get tipped often at all. Thing about it was, the girls I shampood for were established and never helped me out when I needed a shampoo--either they were too busy or just couldn't do such lowly work for me. So, next time the co-worker shampoos you, pay attention & see if you think it really is a deal of "I'll scratch your back if you'll scratch mine." It doesn't always work that way and if it doesn't, then it'd be nice to tip the co-worker. So why did I shampoo for them when they didn't return the favor? Well, I'm nice. :) 2) Their client was waiting and if I could help out, I felt I should & 3) I'd rather be doing something as opposed to nothing. Of course, nowadays, I'd take my laptop and DIS instead. ;)

People generally tip their hairdressers and even though you'll always read that you shouldn't (by the industry not the women's magazines), I think we appreciate tips and if you tip well, trust me, we remember. LOL

Our hairstylist is a friend..... the tip she asks for regularly is chocolate chip cookies! She also gets a generous gift for the holidays.

I find it amazing that my haircut COSTS $10 and some of you are tipping $5!!

There are some advantages to living in rural areas!!! :cool1:

I love my hair washed, so I tell them upfront that I'm looking forward to it!, usaully they will take their time and give a nice little extra massage. I will tip them $5 for a nice wash, but if they just do a quickie with no effort $1.

I struggle with this too. The owner cuts my hair, and I don't tip her. When I pay her, it is no problem. When one of the stylists who works for her is the one who processes the payment, she invariably asks if I want to "close out"
the charge at the cost of the haircut, an obvious hint about a tip. I hate this. The owner charges more, she appears to be more experienced, why do they do this?

I also get steamed when I make an appointment there for one of my DD's with the owner and when we get there, the owner asks, who usually does her hair? I speak right up, you do, but several times she was too busy and one of the other girls cut the hair. I may need to find another salon.

Life is too short to get aggravated by something so petty.
