I am just curious about this. I am a photographer so of coarse i am crazy about taking tons of pics of any vacation but even more so at Disney.

Last night my dh said I was talking like all I wanted to do this trip was take pics and how would we have any fun that way? :rotfl: Oops.

Now I know that when we are in Disney I spend a good bit of time trying to capture good pics and this year will actually be the first time going since I have started really getting more into photography and starting a small business doing it so of coarse I will want to take even more pics this year.

Don't get me wrong, I still want to do lots of other things as well but boy do I love having all my pics to look through when I get home. ;)

Dh does not get that though...ah well. Am I alone?

You are not alone! We have 3 kids and the most vocal about my picture taking is our DD9. On our last trip I took 2,317 pictures (not all at DL mind you). She has not let me live it down yet. I've told my DW that I am at my happiest just simply being at DL with them and capturing memories that will last for years to come. She gets it to a degree but I also tend to go overboard with all the post-processing upon our return. That's where she doesn't get it so much. I can sit and go through pictures all day long but I usually have to break myself away once I start getting all the strange looks.

But seriously.......when on vacation with the family, even though I'm strapped to the camera, I still try to realize their side of things and keep it in check as much as possible. They need my attention more than my camera needs it.

Here is what I have been doing lately on our trips...

Leave the camera in the room, do it for a full day, or for a morning one day, and an evening another.... Don't do it on your last day, so if you see something you want you can go back.

I still get plenty of pictures, but I also get to just concentrate on being with the kids.

I have thought about doing this a couple of times and keep telling myself that if I do it THAT will be the day ds will see a special character or something really great will happen that I want a pic of and then I can't bring myself to do it.

They will thank me one day for capturing all of our memories like this. I love looking back through the albums from previous trips.

I plan to spend lots of time with them all though and make sure they come first and just snap pics as I can and hope to still capture all I want and need. ;)

Last year, we cruised with a group of about 30. Towards the end of the cruise, everyone expected to see me snapping away. Our last evening, we gathered in one of the lounges before dinner. One of the women in our group said, "Shannon, pose like you're taking a picture-just hold it up in front of you". She was dedicating a page in her scrapbook of me, the one always taking pictures.

This summer, DS was well trained after only a day at WDW. Everytime he saw me reach for the camera. He said "should I smile, Mommy"? :thumbsup2 I was sure to hand it off to DH regularly. 1, because it got heavy, and 2, it allowed me to focus completely on having a great time. But, I am lucky that DH stays on the ball and takes great pics!!!

Yes, and I only took about 235 pics last summer over 8 days. After a while when I want to take pics my DH says "Again? You just took some back there." Huh! Some people just don't understand! :goodvibes

I can answer this one: "yes". Actually my wife is fairly understanding, but I got a lot of (mostly good-natured) abuse this trip so far about my photography. Feh! I'd rather NOT get a hard time about it, but if I have to choose between a hard time AND photos, or no hard time and no photos, I'll take the former, thank you!

My wife also wants to be a photography enthusiast but never really finds the time. She did a fair amount in college but admits that she's forgotten all the basics of aperture, etc. We did bring along my first DSLR with us this trip so that she could use it as well, but it's been sitting idle all the time we've been at Disneyland. Oh well... She did borrow my current one for a few minutes today but I felt kind of empty without it in my possession. :teeth:

In a word, "Yes!" ::yes:: my picture taking drives my DH and DS nuts and I'm not even good at it yet! It's to the point where they both refuse to help carry my camera(s) or bag. That's why I was looking for a low cost lightweight tripod -- 'cause I'm going to end up being the only one lugging it through the parks! On my last trip to Beijing, I filled up a 4GB card using my 7.2MP P&S, shooting JPEG. They think I'm nuts, and I keep telling them that one day when I'm dead and gone, they'll be so glad that I took all these photos as they will be able to go through them and relive the memories of each trip.:love1: :lmao: :lmao: Your response above reminded me of myself!:rotfl2:

My DH is very understanding. He even calls himself the "Camera Caddy." My kids are pretty tolerant too. It helped alot when I started paying them a modeling fee ($2.00) as part of their allowance.

It's the in-laws who give me the grief. I took 1500+ pictures the month we were at Lake Erie and they actually told me it would have been nice to see me without the camera hanging around my neck. And they went nuts when I spent $75.00 on a camera bag. Lots of headshaking.

BUT...when my MIL needed photos for her summer collage, who did she come to?. Yep, she came to ME. And I happily gave her several without a comment.

I try very hard not to be intrusive with my photography. I very rarely ask everyone to pose for a shot (maybe once or twice a day). I almost always shoot candids. I prefer candid shots and I hate interrupting everyone's fun so that I can get a posed shot.

I also take most of my shots during the course of our activities. No one minds if I'm busy clicking away while we're on a ride or at a show; or if I stop for 5 seconds to get a shot of a sign and then run to catch back up; or if I have a quick location shoot out on the street while they are shopping in the gift shop. I mix my photography in with what everyone else is doing rather than frequently interrupt their fun and make them wait while dad futzes with the camera.

Back home, I do as much of the photo work on my laptop so that I can be in the family room with everyone else while I do it. That allows me to be part of the conversations, to watch the kids play their Wii games, etc and still get my work done. I then sync up with the desktop in me home office and do my major post processing work at night when everyone else is in bed.

I'm also not the only photographer. My wife sometimes uses the camera. Even my kids have been taking shots recently. A few of the shots on my Canada slideshow were from my son with his Pentax W30. I'm also not the only photo consumer; my wife and kids love to see the pics from the trips so we all value photography as a hobby.

I get it all the time from my wife and son. "come on Daddy".

I like taking pictures of the details or as my wife puts it "photographing trashcans and lightposts".

Leave the camera in the room? No, nooooooooo.... :(

DW and I usually stand next to each other taking the same photo with the same type of camera. Not highly efficient.

She likes photography about as much as I do but she does get impatient when I wait for yet another monorail to come by. I don't understand... there's nothing more forlorn than an empty monorail beam in a photo. ;)

My WDW photography does not bother Mrs. YEKCIM in the least; she just keeps right on going to the next agenda item on her Commando Checklist!

Everyone has their thing that they really want to do when on vacation. At DL, it's the same thing. Some people "have to" ride Space Mountain, others have to go on Pirates. I have to take photos. As long as they do their things, they're tolerant when I take pics. Then again, I rarely hold anyone up, as we're not the type to rush from ride to ride as we've got AP.

95% of what I do makes my family crazy. ;)

OK - seriously - it did at first - but they got used to it. It also makes it easier when my DH and youngest like to do more of the thrill type rides while our oldest and I take photos. Or the girls (since they are older) can just take off leaving DH and I do take things at a much slower pace.

All in all they are very supportive, encouraging and understanding.

There are those moments though.

I also think it would be harder if we didn't go every year and if our girls were younger.

LOL, Oh how I wish dh loved photography as much as I do. My trip would be complete. No worries of holding anyone up or anyone getting tired of me snapping away... :rotfl:

I do not care for a bunch of posed pics either. I like candid shots and this year I really want to get more shots of just STUFF around the parks.

Ah, how I wish I could buy the 40d before we leave! :lmao: That has to wait til Christmas though. ;)

I am loving reading all of your answers! popcorn::

Yes, I get a hard time but it is all in fun, and they all love looking through all the pictures when we get home.

:rotfl2: True for DH too but he just keeps walking until he finds a convenient bench to rest.

But I have to remind him that unless he takes a few shots of me once in a while that everyone will think that all these photos somehow just mysteriously appeared in our albums! He's actually quite a good photographer but would rather carry nothing in the parks......

I've learned to get up early and go on solo photo safaris in the parks! That way I can go at my pace where I want while the guys are sleeping and nobody gets hurt!:rolleyes1
