When you get flamed

I'm fairly new to disboard and still kind of learning how the whole thing works. I have to admit a few times I've been quite shocked at how poeple treat each other considering all the posters have been adults.

It has made me wonder if people would speak like this face to face with a stranger or is it something that is limited to an online forum where they have a certain level of anonimity.

I heard a sociologist talking about forums on the internet a while back and he said that basically there are 'victims and predators'. Personally, I would like to think that this isn't true but sometimes here...................

Usually if a whole lot of people disagree with my position, it makes me wonder if maybe I should re-think my opinion. Sometimes I just stop responding and hope the thread will die a natural death and end up back on page 4 with no more comments.

However, there are many people that like to disagree just to disagree. I had someone get all bent out of shape with me on a thread I started about laundry. I just had to laugh at that one--if you feel that strongly about laundry then I'll concede.

The only posters I've ever reported are spammers and one person wrote something really hateful about another DISer's personal appearance. It was really uncalled for and mean.

I have to say that this has been a very well reasoned thread. Too bad we can't do that all the time.

If it's a thread I started:
1. I try to ignore it and hope it goes away first.
2. If that doesn't work, I respectfully thank people for their opinions (After all, I technically asked for it, right?)
3. But, I never delete my OP and change the title. That just seems to draw more attention to it (I know I tend to read those just because they say "deleted").

If it's for a post I made on someone else's thread, I'd try to defend my position a couple of times and then walk away. Or maybe just walk away to begin with - so not worth it.

If it is a disagreement that I feel like arguing, I do so. If the flamer is a jerk, I stick them on my ignore list so that I no longer see their posts anymore.

I don't worry about getting flamed too much, sometimes when I post I know that others are going to have an opinion I won't like. That is the point. To get a different perspective because I am stuck. Sometimes its poor poor pity me perspective, sometimes its an issue where I need an idea how to handle it because I am too close to it. I don't get worked up, I just say thanks for the opinions and move on.

I will admit that the ones that cause me to get a little bit riled are the ones that have the 'I am always right, my way is the only way' attitude. Geez, a good debate is about seeing opposing opinions, stating your case calmly and effectively and conceding the point that you agree to disagree because you feel strongly about your side. Name calling, getting rude and sarcastic for me only makes that poster opinion worthless. If you have to resort to that kind of stuff you have nothing important for anyone to listen to. Even if their initial point was o.k., I just get turned off. And don't get me started on the threads where people think its o.k. to tell everyone else what they need to do, but have no solution on how to correct the problem. Its the DisBoards, you are not going to solve world problems. You can talk about them but you can not solve them here.

I've been flamed, on a thread that some apparently felt they were going to save the world by doing what they were doing, and it was the only way, and the right way, and everyone else was W R O N G. Geez, it's a debate, we're adults and everyone has an opinion and why try to force yours on someone else.

The flamer reported me, then proceeded to PM asking specifics about um, my personal life. Several times. It was a tad crazy. I sent a very strongly worded pm back to her and just try to avoid her on the boards now.
