When you don't know the allergy, what do you do?

My sister is allergic to chicken, but not eggs. She can eat eggs, but her lips swell when she eats chicken and gets itchy.

My son is allergic to many many many foods.

Someone asked if they had to tell you if egg was in something...yes. Egg is one of the "big 8". Peanuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, tree nuts, fish and shellfish must be listed prominently on labels by law. (my son is allergic to 5 of the big 8 along with another 7 identified foods so far).

I hope they're able to tell you what's happening. If he is diagnosed with an allergy there are lots of resources out there for you.

Youre right, I was mistaken. What the doctor said is often the fast food places mix canola and peanut oil together for frying to save money. I don't mean the major fast food places, but the local flavor type.

Thanks for the allergy info websites, they have been most helpful

No advice, just wanted to offer my support. My son finally outgrew his dairy and egg allergies, but I remember going through this all too well. The skin test will be a big help in narrowing down what you have to avoid, and from there you'll become a label reading expert! I heartily endorse the Food Allergy Network website. It was a big help to us. Good luck to you.

And by the way, Geaux Saints!

I will be bringing the label to the allergist. Thanks for the heads up about not giving him benedryl a few days prior to the appointment since I am anxious to figure out this puzzle sooner than later. Whether it be eggs, nuts, or something else, I don't like not knowing what "IT" is. In the meantime, we are going to work with what the pediatrician thinks may be the chief suspects of eggs or nuts and avoiding all super processed foods until I hopefully have an answer. He has already had minor reactions (read rashes) to penicillin, grass, mosquitoes, and suntan lotion. This is the first time it is over something he has eaten.

I think this will help you tremendously while you wait for the appointment. We eat way less processed food in trying to manage DD's food allergy and I make a lot of "real" food from scratch.

(It didn't even register earlier, so I'll say it now. Hello from a north Louisiana girl. Can't wait till Sunday! :cheer2:)
