what do you use it for? I'm going to Colorado next week and will be carrying my job's laptop with me.

More than half the time it just stays in its case since the flights aren't usually very long for me... other times I will load pictures and edit those. Some watch DVDs on theirs... just a few ideas. Again it mostly, I just put it away read books :)

LOL, Jason!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11  The guy across the aisle from me on our way back from VA had a laptop. He and his girlfriend were watching DVDs. Of course, DS had to say...can we get one? LOL! It's my new toy!

90% of the time it stays in case until I get to hotel but once in awhile I have had reports to finish so got some work done. But I try to avoid work at all costs on vacation.

I play games w/mine. I also have a bunch of vacation pictures loaded so I look at pictures of the kids. It came in handy when we circled Chicago for 45 minutes a few months ago!

Short flights it stays in the bag. Sometimes I play games or watch DVDs. DW used to put it it the seat pocket in front of her (her work laptop) so the person in front of her couldn't move their seat back into her lap.

Last time we took one to WDW, I typed my trip report for the Dis on it too. We also went through our digital pictures on the plane.

We have to take a laptop with us to WDW to transfer camera pictures off each day (DW is a bit paranoid of loosing the camera so even with a 1gb memory card...), and to check in with the Dis...We went to DL last October, no laptop...we wound up in innoventions at a "Learn Google" booth for 3 hours after I hacked past the firewall (wasn't too too difficult, and they weren't too busy, the people working the booth were a little surprised I was actually able to check my mail/messages)...I digress...

Mostly Spider Solitaire, and Microsoft Word/Excel. Long flights, movies are good.

:bounce:

I always have my laptop out... I am usually going over presentations or emails but I have watched dvd's.

Be prepared to take it out of the case and put it through the security scanner separate. I taped my business card to the front and back of it in case there would be a mixup at security.

Mine doesn't have DVD, I sometimes play solitare on it to pass the time.

You can't be serious with this question.

Sounds like a reasonable question to me, Nick.

So in that case if someone carried a portable CD player

on a plane and asked "what do I do with the CD player" it would be OK?

That's a great idea. Mine is a company one. I work from home and also travel alot with my daughter (she's a showbiz girl) so I take my laptop everywhere we go. I'm always anxious that I'll lose the laptop!

Nick, Nick, Nick, you silly goose you. Jodi asked.......
When you bring a laptop computer on the plane what do you use it for?...
I think (may be wrong), but I think Jodi was wondering what you (speaking generically) use your (again, genericaly) laptop for on a trip/flight. I do think she received a number of varied things people use theirs for...picture editing, picture viewing, catching up on work letters and such, watching DVD movies, playing games, Net connectivity, emails among them. As for a CD player, I think you can only play CD's, not sure, but even so, if Jodi asked what you (speaking generically) did with a CD player, what would be wrong with asking? This is, after all, the Community Board on the DIS, where asking questions, any questions, as long as within DIS guidelines (whether silly or stupid to you or anyone else) are part of the territory.

BTW, Nick, what do you (speaking specifically) use your laptop for??

Dan

I'm sure I don't need to say this to a DIS'er but just give some thought to which DVD's you might choose to watch on the plane. DH and I took a flight recently and a fellow across aisle was watching R rated movies. He had the earpiece in and the closed captioning on (?) and the little girl in front of us who was unaccompanied was watching the movie. The man noticed but didn't seem to care! I was appalled that someone could be so irresponsible in front of a child!
What a good chance to watch a Disney movie though!!!!!

Dan and Nick, Now Now Now...Don't Fight, Play nice...

If Nick wants to use his laptop for "Computer Stuff" far be it from me to doubt him.

Actually, as a related aside, I will generally pull out my CD player on a long trip and listen to a Book-On-Tape. It helps to distract me from the flying, so I can get to sleep. There are self help books, novels and fiction; not just tunes. There is even a news service that delivers an executive summary on Tapes/CDs. I also like the books on a long drive. It lets me concentrate on something other than the bordom w/o me taking my eyes off of the road...

Oh, and Dan, we are still waiting for you to pick a color...

Sorry, I disagree. It's not a stranger's responsibility to watch out for another person's child.

In any case, I travel a lot and you wouldn't believe the movies they show on the planes on the screens for anyone to see - edited some, but nonetheless, I've seen Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Terminator, etc... being played. When we took DD to Europe, there was not one movie appropriate for kids shown on the 8 hour flight.

We watch DVD's and when we get to Disney, we download pictures each night from our camera.

Dh travels a LOT. He still uses it on the plane to watch DVD's. He has to be connected to his company's computer to do work and he can't do that on the airplane (much to his relief! LOL!). I'm sure he's played a game or two on there also, but he likes to be online for that too. ;)

The idea of taping one's business card on it is a great idea, I'll have to tell dh (he leaves again tomorrow). Thanks for that tip Debbie!
