When you bought into DVC....

Were you aware of the room limits.

I posted on another thread that I thought everyone knew about the 4/4/8/12 room limits, but maybe some people didn't know.

So just out of curiosity...Did you know about the 4/4/8/12 room limits when you bought in to DVC?

We were well aware of the occupancy limits, and we honor them. We just couldn't afford to buy enough points, so we hope to add on at a later date and plan to Bank, Borrow, or Beg until that point in time!

I voted other because when we bought, we bought only 150 pts. knowing that it would not be enough for us once our youngest turned 3 and we would need to add on in the future. We added on 112 points 2 months later and still don't have enough! So, my answer is yes did know the room occupancy limits, but we did not buy enough at first to cover all of us when our kids were all over 3 or guests. Hope that made sense!

We were waiting to buy at BCV but then decided to get 150 points at VWL and do an add-on at BCV later.

There are only 3 of us in our family - DH, DS and myself. We may invite MIL (Fl resident) to vacation with us. If she does she will bring a sleeping bag for DS to sleep on the floor. It's not because of room occupancy but DS will not sleep in same bed as MIL.

Yes we knew the limits of the rooms when we bought - but its just myself DH and DD so we have in the past when we stayed at other Disney properties taken a neice or nephew to make four so it's okay for us. However you should be able to put 5 people into a one bedroom (not studio) reguardless of age and be charged $10.00/night for the 5th person over 3yrs old. This is (I believe) how most hotels do it.

Occupancy limits were never discussed with us by our guide but it was made pretty clear by the hardback book we received with our informational packet. It lists how many people each unit type is designed to accommodate. I figure our guide may not have stressed occupancy limits because we are a family of 3 and would not exceed the occupancy limits in any of the units.

When we had our DVC tour in Dec. '00, we brought our 3 children (two of them are teenagers). I noticed the information said 4 in the 1 bedroom and questioned our guide about it. He told me it was fine for us to have the 5 of us in the 1 bedroom. After I saw some of the debates on this subject I got worried and wrote to member services to find out the "official" policy. They wrote back stating that it was okay to have 5 in the 1 bedroom, that "it is a matter of comfort" and that the extra child will not receive any bedding.
Have people been told they can't have 5 or are they just assuming it?

We usually get 12 in a studio. 4 in a bed, 1 on a counter, 2 on a table, 2 in the tub and 3 on the floor

Occupancy limits were quite obvious when we joined in 1995. The free park pass program was in place. You got 2/2/4/6 passes for studio/1br/2br/gv (half of the occupancy).

I must have had the same cm as WDWENDY because we were told the same exact thing. We are also a family of five with two teenagers and when I questioned the 4 to a 1 bedroom rule, she said it was "just fine, get a blow up mattress".

Even before we reached the decision to buy, our Guide discussed the capacity a studio, 1BR, 2BR, and Grand Villa at The Disney Vacation Club (as OKW was called back in 1994).

Then, over the phone, our Guide went over a Product Understanding Checklist (or some such name) that, among other things, clearly spelled out the capacity of each type of accomodcation. We also had to initial each item on that sheet as part of the transaction paperwork that was sent to us.

It was very clear to us. As a family of four, we could stay in any size unit. But we bought so we could stay in spacious 2BR, 2BA condos. The only time we've booked a 1BR has been when it's only my wife and I.

Not only did our guide explain occupancy limits at all DVC resorts, she told us of instances where members had traded out to another destination and brought more than the resort's limit and had been denied occupancy. She said of the cases she was aware of, there was nothing MS could do-the people lost their points in addition to not getting a room.

We were told by our guide that they are guidelines and that is all they supply bedding for but you could have an extra person or two. She even went so far as to recommend we get one of those blow up mattresses.

I voted "other" because we bought enough points to cover whatever unit that our family of four (or five) would be the most comfortable in---and that may vary with each individual vacation. It's the flexability we love.

We bought enough for our family of four for a nice trip every year. We never had to ask about additional people for the villas.

Four months after the purchase, we had a surprise phone call from the adoption agency we had used for our two children, then ages 3 and 7. Our 3 year old DD's birthmom had another baby and she wanted the baby to go to our family if we could. This was a total surprise (we just gave the final baby stuff to charity the month before) and of course, we knew this was the right thing to do. With the SURPRISE addition, we could not and still cannot afford additional points currently, so I have to be creative with borrowing/banking/cash etc.

So, honestly, when comments are made about families of five not buying enough points, etc. etc. etc....I do get a few feathers ruffled and hit the back button.

I was told the same exact thing as wdwendy and dvcdude - my guide saw I had three children with me. I specifically asked about 5 in a 1 BDR and she said, no problem, even in studio, but no extra bedding. I honestly would not like to put five in a studio especially for a week (that is why we went with two cabins on the cruise), perhaps the 1 BDR. My friend who also has three children same ages has stayed twice in a studio plus at the BW. I have not yet stepped foot in OKW. I hate to comment on this subject because I see how touchy it gets. I won't and cannot comment since I am not an official dvc veteran (meaning have not stayed or experienced studio or 1 bdr. - next year we plan on crusing again and hoping to add a few nights at okw - definitely not a studio). My honest opinion - they should have something in betwen the four and 8. 4/6/8 (?) Just a thought please, I admit I am not expert - so don't attack.
