When will School start...

When will kids in the south go back to school this fall? We go back after Labor Day. And Labor Day is late this year. We are thinking of planning a trip to the World in late August and was just wonder when the South went back to get an idea of what the crowds might be like.

The last two weeks of August are better for crowds then the first two weeks of Aug. I think you find a variety of dates for school starting in the SE. Georgia starts the first week of August.

Our area of Alabama starts the second week in Aug.

I am also in jersey and I know that the kids are starting before Labor Day this year. It might only be 2 days for the kids but we will be there before Labor Day.

WE have always done the the 3rd or 4th week in Aug and we have not had any problems with the crowds.

I would check with your system to make sure you are still starting after labor day. I know that in our most recent contract negotiations (teacher here) the School Committee insisted on putting it into our contract that we could start the week before Labor Day (still in September though) if the holiday is late like it will be this year. They haven't released the 09-10 calendar, but I am speculating that we will be starting on the 1st or 2nd instead of the 8th (teachers) or 9th (students). They did this because we came very close to having to cancel vacations or teach on Saturdays the last time Labor Day was late because of too many snow days.

If you are still starting school after Labor Day, I'd say hit the parks the first week in Sept. (8/31-9/6) to be safe.

Either way, a friend of mine travels to Disney the last week in August every summer and while it's hot, she says the crowds are pretty light, which you need when it is that hot. Crowds and excessive heat make for a pretty miserable trip. I did it in June 2007 and let me tell you, never again!

I went Sept 5-9 (after Labor Day, Fri-Tues) and the crowds were nonexistant, though the restaurants were decently busy. It was so hot this New Englander was melting! I didn't want to eat at all, and we'd take afternoon breaks just to get out of the sun! The worst part wasn't the sun outside, but the constant HOT-COLD-HOT-COLD from dipping in air conditioning and back out in the sun.

I don't think I'll be going back in the summer months any time soon.

Florida now has a stupid state rule that school can't start before 2 weeks before Labor Day, so all of Florida schools will most likely be starting on or around August 17th. We used to start around Aug 2 and then get a fall break and be out in the middle of May....but I guess they decided it was better if we couldn't enjoy our own state during the off season.

August 1 for the kids here in middle Tennessee, just like it has been for the last 7 years. Its a wonderful schedule. As teachers, DW & I love it. Its popular with the parents and kids too.

In central MS, we usually go back the 1st week of August (teachers actually started end of July last year). But a rumor has been floating that the legislature is going to push it back to Labor Day, to try to save on some AC costs. We'll see-the rumor has been around before and nothing has ever come of it.

We start after labor day in Virginia. Down in South Carolina where my parents live, they start early/mid August.

That's not completely correct. It depends on each school district. Our county goes back August 17th.

Thanks everyone for all the replies. Hopefully in the next few weeks we will decide if and when we are going to go this year. Now DH says he really wants to go around Christmas time so we might hold off till December. Maybe we can make it a birthday trip for me!
