January 2, 6: Les Bonnes Artistes, French for “The Good Artists,” came together over lunch to help 10 female artists keep on submitting for art exhibitions around the Lowcountry, and soon, they all banded together to create their exciting new multimedia exhibition, “Fresh Strokes.”

The Coastal Discovery Museum will host 10 female artists that have banded to present a multimedia program of “Fresh Strokes” from November 7-January 14. The exhibition contains watercolors and oils, acrylics, collage and monoprints. The subjects in this exhibition range from abstract to representational art, landscapes and figures.

The ten artists include Joyce Nagel, Jo Dye, Joanna Chalson, Anne Coughlin, Evelyn Kowtko, Doris Shay, Barbara Spencer, Dorothy Steelman, Emily Wilson and Irene Williamson. This show is an opportunity for the artists to express their particular interests and present a generous diversity of works to be enjoyed. All work is for sale by the artists and the exhibit is no charge for admission.

January 2-30: Tour Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge, a unique location and discover different habitats: the Salt Marsh, the Maritime Forest and a fresh water lagoon. January 5, 12, 19, and 26: The Farmer’s Market at Sea Pines Center, 71 Lighthouse Rd., presented by Lowcountry Produce. This community event brings LOCAL farm fresh food to residents and visitors on Hilton Head Island. lowcountryproduce.com.

January 6: at 3 p.m. Bald Eagles of the Lowcountry Learn how bald eagles became an endangered species, about the efforts that helped bring them back and what we can do to secure their future at the Coastal Discovery Museum with Tom Murphy, a retired biologist and principal investigator for the Bald Eagle Program for 33 years at 3 p.m. This presentation will cover the successes and difficulties in recovering and maintaining Bald Eagles in South Carolina. $7 per person. January 6: Coastal Country Night at Poseidon’s Rooftop Bar with special quest BOOTLESS. The original country, southern rock band based in Charleston, Bootless returns to at Poseidon’s Rooftop Bar. Come hear this band that blends country lyrics with rock-and-roll swagger. They’ll sing about everything from beer, beaches and boots (or lack thereof), to mud slingin’ and shotgun blasts. Every other Thursday, Starting January 7, from 2-3:30 p.m., professional photographer Scott Moody will teach the tricks of the trade with nature photography. After a brief introduction indoors, participants will explore the scenic and historic Honey Horn grounds to learn about lighting, subject matter and composition. The class is appropriate for those 12 and older and space is limited. $40 per person. Reservations are required by calling (843) 689-6767 ext. 223.

January 13: Stardust Orchestra will appear in concert at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church Hilton Head Island, 540 William Hilton Pkwy., for the kickoff of church family night. The concert is free. For more information, call (843) 681-3696 or go to fpchhi.org.

January 16: Chowder Challenge & Silent Auction Local restaurants will compete for the title of the “Top People’s Choice Award” and “Judge’s Award” for the best chowder on the Island to benefit The Heather Trew Foundation for Organ Donation and Research at the 3rd Annual Chowder Challenge & Silent Auction, noon-4 p.m. Come out and vote for your favorite chowder dish while enjoying a Kids Zone, a great silent auction and music performed by The Headliners at this family fun event. January 20: at 3 p.m. Dating back to mid Cambrian period, some 500 million years ago, the more than 67,000 described species of crustacea include some very tasty critters found in local waters today. They are featured in this presentation that includes some of their lesser known, yet quite fascinating cousins. Live critters will be shown. Bender is an artist, naturalist and curator of the Lowcountry Estuarium – a Coastal Learning Center in the Town of Port Royal. $7 per person.

January 24-31: The 7th annual Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber Restaurant Week! Do you have a favorite dining hotspot? Is there a popular restaurant you’ve always wanted to visit? January 27: The Coastal Discovery Museum will host Dr. Chris Marsh on January 27 at 3 p.m. for “The Biogeography of the Carolinas.” Dr. Marsh will give a bird’s eye view of the biogeographical regions of the Carolinas, discussing how unique habitats add to the region’s diversity of plants and animals. January 30: Miss Hilton Head Island Pageant. This is an official local preliminary competition for the Miss South Carolina, Miss South Carolina Teen, and Miss America, Miss America’s Outstanding Teen competitions. 7 p.m. at Hilton Head High School, 70 Wilborn Rd. January 31: Snow Day at Shelter Cove Community Park, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. A large snow field and bounce houses. Concessions sold separately. Proceeds benefit the Island Rec.
