When was the last time you really got dirty?

For me it was cleaning the gutters a couple weeks ago. I mean, I had gloves so tehre was nothing under my fingernails, but the sludge got all over of course.

Wow. You people get dirty more often than I would have thought! I figured there would be some whose work required them to get dirty, and a few gardeners, but most of us would be people who rarely get dirty anymore. I actually sort of like getting dirty occasionally; it seems kind of unnatural to be clean all the time.

I wish I were good at gardening. If I were I'd do more of it, but I just have the worst luck with plants. Or maybe it's skill or knowledge or whatever. I keep telling myself that this will be the year I'll really get a garden planted but it never gets beyond a few tomato plants. And I live in Florida so I have no excuse!

Frequently. But, the worst was red-flagging the tractor tire class at a mud bog at a facility that was all red clay. It was everywhere, in my ears, you name it. People came out of the stands to take my picture. It was bad!

I used to bring 2 5-gallon buckets of clean water. I’d strip down to a pair of shorts, and give myself a “bath” in one bucket, then the other. And then change clothes for the trip home.

On this particularly filthy day, my buddy stole all my water & then the fire truck (where’s we refilled) left. Had to beg 1/2 gallon from a dozen different people.

I can easily get dirt on my hands just playing out in the yard with my dog and a ball! But last time I got actual dirt on my hands from doing yard work was this past fall when we raked and bagged leaves, and cleaned under trees and all that.

Today, however, my hands got pretty dirty to the point where I have to cut off all my nails and start again, as they got grungy and ragged from doing a deep cleaning to my Mom's house while she's at rehab. Scrubbed walls, floors, sinks, toilet, heating vents, washed windows and curtains, changed sheets, etc. I'd tried to find a cleaner to come in and was unsuccessful, but it actually felt pretty good to clean it. My house next! :faint:

I cannot remember the last time I got actual soil on my hands. However, Friday at work I was just playing with my date stamp while talking on the phone...I really wasn't paying attention to what I was doing. I happened to notice I got black ink all over my hands. I couldn't wash it off, and hand sanitizer also failed to get it off. It took until today for it to finally go away completely.

I love plants, and so as far as getting my hands dirty all the time...

As far as being cover in mud and dirt... we were in the Dominican Republic( 3 yr ago) and went on a excursion to ride those dune buggies, it had been raining and the road were muddy, we were cover in mud from head to toe, it was like a 4+ hours excursion, trekked through the countryside, we went to a beach, then a coffee plantation, and then to a cave to swim, swimming in the cave was really cool, and the water was cold and it had a water fall... so we sorta rinsed off, by the time we got back to where we started, and on the truck ( open air, like a old army truck with the canvas cover) and they got us back to the resort... we were just as dirty... When we returned to the resort they looked at us like what in world happened to you....Covered in mud... They asked us to make sure we showered off in the pool area before heading into our room or getting into the pool...which we did.... it was like a river of mud and dirt running off of us.. It was a awesome day... super fun.... The t-shirts and shorts we wore that day we use for our working in the yard days...

The only time I don't really get dirt on my hands is when the ground is frozen. But then there is helping dh with some kind of project in the garage usually involving some sort of vehicle so it isn't dirt, it's oil or grime.
Whether it is gardening, cleaning up the yard, playing with the dog, "working" up at our camp, finding things in the woods, and other things- I'm using my hands outside doing something that will end up getting dirt or other stuff on them.
I honestly can't imagine a life where my hands never touched soil.

Almost daily from May -October, I have a perennial flower garden and work in it just about every day.

Fairly frequently.... either outdoor work ... like building porches (last summer it was a new poured concrete retaining wall porch, this year hopefully a rear deck), gardening, moving dirt/yard grading.... we live on a big creek so the kids and I are usually down there either in the water or 4-wheeling (that can get messy). Indoors it's stuff like mudding/sanding/painting/caulking/tile grout/etc. We will go stretches without much grime but at least several times during the course of a year depending on what we're trying to accomplish or have fun with.

When I had to clean out 34 years of "stuff" collected in closets along the way when we had to move out of our home this past fall. We put most of it in tubs thinking it's going to come back into our newly finished home.......yeah right! Those tubs will be in DH's pole barn for the rest of our lives!! :teeth:

I am a potter for fun and I get "dirty" all of the time. It is clay, not soil. I love to garden as well, so I get dirty on my hands very frequently throughout the spring and summer, but I usually wear gloves.
