When to look for seat sales?

Hi everyone! I figured I might get some answers here... I am looking to fly in February to Ft Lauderdale for vacation this year... We are Canadian so flying out of Toronto is pretty much a no go unless we get a really good seat sale. When do you typically find seat sales on lines like Southwest or Jetblue? I always seem to stumble upon them. I signed up for e-mails from both. Are there any other tips on getting cheap flights?
I do use airmiles / aeroplan but wont have close to enough to book a flight or get a deal on flights!
