When to get a celebration cake?

We will be celebrating my youngest son's family day while at Disney. I want to get the regular celebration cake (the domed MM cake) while there and need help deciding when to get it. We have the dining plan, so I don't want to "waste" part of our dining plan by not getting the desserts (they wouldn't let us switch it for an appetizer, would they? If they would, that would be an option then). We have 1 TS meal too many, so I could get it for that meal since we likely wouldn't pay OOP for dessert. But, we're also doing an Illuminations cruise and I told them we'd be celebrating. I could add the cake for that, but not sure if it would be good to do on the boat.

I'd like to do it at a time when he would feel special. Somewhere they would make a bit of a fuss over him. So here are my options:

1) Have it during the Illuminations Cruise on our first night.
2) Have it on our first day in MK at our Skipper Canteen Dinner (we'd pay OOP for this meal)
3) Have it at Sci-Fi Dine in in HS for lunch (we'd pay OOP for this meal)

I'm leaning towards one of the first two since Sci-Fi is dark and has the movie playing.

I haven't done a cruise yet so I have no experience with having a cake there, although I do know that it can be done.

I have had a cake at Skipper Canteen and would happily do so again if they still had custom cakes. If I was choosing this would be my first choice. The desserts here also don't particularly appeal to me, so I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything.

I would think the darkness in Sci Fi might take away a little from the excitement of the presentation.

Is it an option to do it right on his family day? We have a special celebration on my daughter's Forever Family Day each year too.

Actual custody day is the week after our trip, so we're celebrating a little early. The first day we met him is the day we're leaving.

Look, the first day we met him! He was so flippin' cute. Still is!

I haven't done the cruise, so I can't really comment on it, but if you are on a pontoon, I wonder how comfortable it would be to even cut the cake and eat it on the boat?

Of the other two restaurants, I would do Skipper's. I agree with you and the PP - Sci-Fi is too dark and if you are in a car, you aren't facing each other. Plus the "tables" in the cars are quite narrow, so a bit cramped with a cake.
